Mary Marion Buttars

BUTTARS, Mary Marion – Peacefully at Fairhaven Long-Term Care Home in Peterborough on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at 86 years of age. Beloved wife of the late Warren Buttars (2011). Loving mother of Coralee Vass (Ken) of Peterborough, Marion Soublière of Ottawa, and Arlene Wherrett (Paul Gwilym) of Greenwich Park, Australia. Proud grandmother of Darren (Sarah) Vass, Dominique Soublière (Stephen Yu), Shannon (Caleb) Smith and Ryan Wherrett (Nadeen Madkour). Great-grandmother of Samuel Vass. Dear sister of the late Robert, Neil, Harold, Cecil and Errol Jibb. Lovingly remembered by Phil Soublière.

Mary was an elementary school teacher affiliated with schools in northern Ontario, Bewdley and Peterborough. She also worked at the Peterborough branch of the Canadian Red Cross for 10 years. Mary taught Sunday school at Knox United Church in Peterborough, helped adult learners to read, and volunteered at the Peterborough Museum & Archives, the King George Public School library, and the Five Counties Children’s Centre. Mary and Warren were instrumental in supporting Vinh Pham, Nelson and Phan An and their children Henry and Tony, all formerly of Vietnam, upon their arrival in Canada in the 1980s.

Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life gathering will be held in the chapel on Saturday June 10th at 12 noon. Friends who are unable to attend are invited to watch the Livestream of the service (from Mary's obituary, scroll down to service and click join livestream).

Fairhaven’s staff provided Mary with dedicated care for more than 14 years. Donations to the Fairhaven Foundation in Peterborough would be appreciated.

Mary accomplished much in her life, all while battling mental health challenges. Her determination to help others first could be seen in endless acts of love and kindness. She will be greatly missed.
