STRICKLAND, Gerald William – Passed away peacefully on December 31, 2021, in his 87th year, surrounded by loved ones at Peterborough Regional Health Centre. Beloved partner of Cathy O’Brien and loving father of Terrie (Leo Varlese), David, Michael (Julia), and Cathy’s children Christopher and Shannon. Proud Grandpa Gerry to Alessandro, Giuliano, Mitchell, Hailey, Nicholas, Collin, Heather, and Rachel. Brother-in law of Carol Strickland and predeceased by his parents Herbert and Jane Strickland and brother Ronald.
Gerry was an employee of General Electric of Peterborough for forty-seven years and fought a courageous battle against cancer and heart disease but won the war on life with a strong battalion of loving family members, friends, and colleagues. Gerry’s passion for life and family could always be experienced in his ability to listen, provide guidance and he could always be seen in the stands cheering on his children and grandchildren at sports games and practices. An avid gardener, bowler, skier and golfer, Gerry was always good for a story and a history lesson shared over a bottle of his favorite wine picked up at one of his and Cathy’s wine tours.
Gerry was recognized by the City of Peterborough for his contributions to sports as a participant, coach, and President of the Peterborough Church Hockey League. He volunteered hours of support building minor hockey and lacrosse in both Peterborough and East Gwillimbury outside of Toronto. He was a member of Devil’s Elbow Ski Club and a founding member of Bethany Ski Club. He loved his Chicago Blackhawks, Peterborough Lakers, and Toronto Blue Jays and anytime Team Canada was playing. He will be sadly missed but celebrated by all those whose lives he touched.
Gerry’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the medical health teams at Peterborough Regional Health Centre for their kindness and care over the past couple of months.
