SISTER ELIZABETH LUDWIG Of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada entered into her eternal life at Mount St. Joseph, Peterborough ON, on March 2, 2024. Elizabeth Anne was born in 1930, near Browning Saskatchewan. She was the daughter of the late Henry Ludwig and his wife Catherine Fornwald and was one of thirteen children. Elizabeth (Betty) entered the Sisters of St. Joseph Community in Peterborough in 1949 and received the religious name of Sister St. Stephen.
Sister Elizabeth is survived by her brother John, and sisters, Lorraine Tardi, Cathy Hoffart, Anne Welch, Josephine (Doug) Pettigrew, sister-in-law Faye Ludwig.
She is predeceased by her brothers Albert (Ivy), and Jerome, and sisters Edna (Roland) Deland, Sister Gertrude Ludwig CSJ, Elsie (Paul) Madden, Sister Mary Ludwig CSJ, Christine (John) Diemert and brothers-in-law Armand Hoffart and Tom Tardi.
She is lovingly remembered and will be missed by the members of her CSJ religious community, her family and many nieces and nephews.
Sister Elizabeth began her ministry to prepare for teaching and also began studies in X-Ray technology. Her early ministry included teaching at St. Alphonsus, Immaculate Conception and St. John’s Schools in Peterborough. However, as Sister St. Stephen at that time, she was transferred to her home province, Estevan, Saskatchewan. At. St. Joseph’s Hospital she worked for eleven years as an X-Ray technician.
Sister returned to Peterborough for the next thirteen years to work in the X-Ray Department at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Peterborough. However, always a “Westerner”, Sr. Elizabeth was again assigned to Estevan Saskatchewan where she served another eleven years in X-Ray at St. Joseph’s hospital. Following her retirement, she was able to reside with her mother while providing care for her in her last years.
In her retirement years Sister Elizabeth moved to Edmonton and provided community services to the Sisters living at St. John’s Convent and later at the Grey Nuns Regional Centre. During those years Sister was involved in volunteer work including helping in the soup kitchen at Marian Center, taking communion to the sick and visiting the shut-ins.
Sister Elizabeth returned to Peterborough to the new Mount St. Joseph in 2009 and has lived at the Mount for the past fifteen years, giving witness by her faith life of prayer, patient endurance and cheerful spirit.
Sister Elizabeth will be remembered for her community spirit and wisdom, her Saturday afternoon tea parties at the Mount, love of playing cards and enjoying life by listening to stories and sports.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on March 8 at 10:00 a.m. at Mount St. Joseph Chapel, Peterborough. This will be followed by interment at Highland Park Cemetery, Peterborough. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Sr. Elizabeth can be made at www.cjcanada.org Donate.
