BROWN, E. Gwendolyn B. – At Peterborough Regional Health Centre on Friday, June 21, 2013 in her 92nd year. Loving wife of the late William “Bill” Brown (2007) for 63 years. Dear mother of Ginger and the late Jim and Rob. Predeceased by her parents Percy and Gwen Bond, sister Sherry Mackie and brother Jim Bond. Gwen will be sadly missed by her many loving nieces and nephews and her wide circle of devoted friends. Gwen had a love of life and an optimistic spirit that endeared her to all who knew her. Recently she was given the 2013 Ontario Senior of the Year Award for her significant contribution to the Peterborough community. Gwen’s enthusiastic commitment to theatre in Peterborough has spanned many decades. She has directed and acted with the Peterborough Theatre Guild, St. James Players and Arbour Theatre. In gratitude for her dedication, Gwen’s friends have named seats for her at both Showplace and the Theatre Guild, and the Market Hall has honoured her at one of their Bright Lights evenings. She was named to the Peterborough Pathway of Fame in 1999. In 2006 she was honoured by Showplace for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts. At an early age, Gwen obtained her A.R.C.T. in singing from the Toronto Royal Conservatory, and she has sung in numerous musicals, quartets, and along with her trusty ukulele, been the catalyst for many joyous sing songs with family and friends. Gwen coached young participants at her church to hone their scripture reading skills, and she was a volunteer reader for the blind for 33 years. Gwen’s comic timing is apparent in the charming photo of her as Miss February in the 2005 Flood Relief Calendar. She was a golfer of renown, an avid horseback rider and skier. She played bridge, scrabble, dominos and swam regularly until a few weeks before her death. Gwen was also a master at sudoko and crossword puzzles, and was quickly becoming adept with her new IPad.
