Harriet would have been 100 years old on August 14, 2015. Not only was she blessed with many years of good health and loving family, she was also blessed with a life of faith in her Heavenly Father. She often said, “When the Good Lord calls me home, Rejoice and be glad, I’ve had a good life, loving husband, parents and family – who could ask for more.”
Harriet was born in Jackson, Michigan on August 14, 1915 to Sarah and George Maier and moved to Toledo when she was 3 years old. Harriet was the 6th child in the family of 8 siblings. After moving to Toledo she attended Spring Elementary School and Woodward High School. After graduation she worked a variety of jobs, including Cannan Dry Cleaners where she met her Husband Max. Harriet married Max Culbertson in 1937. As World War II approached she took a job at McKay-Davis Company.
In 1953 Harriet and Max opened Perry Petite Shop, with “air conditioning” as was noted on the front door, in Perrysburg, Ohio. In 1968 the shop name was changed to Harriet’s. Petite clothing for ladies had become the mode of the day at that time and folks thought that was all she carried. In 1974 she sold her business and the new owners continued the Harriet’s name till 1994. While running the business Harriet like to hire young high school girls and over the years she said she had many bright, hard-working girls helping in the store. Two of these girls eventually became their own shop owners, Paula (Hupp) Fall (Sophia Lustig Shop in Toledo) and Candy (Artz) Sturtz (Lady C in Sylvania). Harriet said, “It makes me feel good that their experience in my shop inspired these two girls to start their own stores.”
After retirement Harriet stayed busy with friends, family and her church, Zoar Lutheran. Har-riet bowled and golfed well into her 90’s.
Harriet was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Max, brothers George Brown, and Roy Maier, sisters, Marjorie Watson, Eleanor Bobel and Helen DeLay.
