He was born on March 24, 1937 in Taylorville, IL to Thomas and Emma (Klein) Johnson. They preceded him in death along with one brother, Andy Tenosky. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Georgia (Pickering) Johnson of Dunlap. They were married on September 22, 1957 in Taylorville.
Together they had three sons, Andy (Teresa) Johnson of Arlington, TX, Eric (Poppy) Johnson of Edelstein and Jeff (Karen Liu) Johnson of Oakland, CA.
Tom is also survived by his grandchildren, Angela (Gregory) Wright of Arlington, TX, Crystal Johnson of Arlington, TX, Elizabeth (Justin) Trompeter of Dunlap, Scott Johnson of Dunlap, Reece (Brie) Johnson of Peoria, Ethan Johnson of Edelstein, Trevor (Lauren) Johnson of Nashville, TN and Jonah Johnson of Edelstein and his great-grandchildren, Ana Wright, Amelia Wright, Zoey Trompeter, Corinne Trompeter, Cole Trompeter and Riley Johnson.
Tom was an avid fisherman, it started with fishing with his father in Taylorville, IL. He always had time to fish with his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Tom spent many hours outdoors working a garden or sitting on his deck telling stories of his life.
Tom was a proud 20 year United States Marine Corps Veteran. He retired in May of 1976 as a Major in the H & S Battalion in Twentynine Palms, CA.
In 1962, Tom was awarded the US Marine Corps Annual Rifle Squad Competition as the Top Squad Nationally. Tom served in Vietnam in 1966 and was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with combat “V” for his bravery on June 21, 1966.
Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 20, 2023 at Davison-Fulton Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria. Tom’s grandson, Trevor Johnson will officiate. A graveside service with military honors will follow at 1 p.m. at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL.
