Terry L. Simmons

Terry L. Simmons, 68, of Peoria passed away at 1:50 p.m. Thursday, April 23, 2015, at UnityPoint Health-Methodist.Terry was born April 11, 1947, in Peoria. He married Elaine Toms on Sept. 23, 1978. He is survived by the love of his life for 36 years; one son, James (Heidi Jo Wys) Simmons of Bartonville; one daughter, Chrissy Simmons of Peoria; one grandson, Byron Simmons; one sister, Sheila (Robert) Higham of Bartonville; his father-in-law, James Toms of Dixon; two nieces; two nephews; and many relatives.Terry was preceded in death by one daughter, Amie Toms; his mother, Joan Johnson; his maternal grandparents, Clinton and Jesse Harwick; and his mother-in-law, Lillian Toms.After high school, he enlisted in the Air Force, where he served for four years during the Vietnam War.He then worked as a millwright at Pabst Brewery for a number of years before starting his 20-year career as a policeman for the city of Peoria. During his career, he achieved the rank of sergeant and many awards and commendations before retiring in 2003. After retirement, and through his life, he enjoyed carpentry, but most of all he loved his family.Cremation rites will be accorded. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 26, 2015, at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel.He was an avid Chicago Bears fan and a member of Carpenter's Local Union 183 in Peoria.Memorials may be made to Heritage Bank of Central Illinois in the family's name for medical expenses.
