Russell Wayne “Uncle Bucket” “The Bucket” “Rusty” Hopkins of Peoria, passed away in his home on Wednesday, August 7, 2024 at the age of 67. Russell worked at Royal Publishing for 35 years until his retirement.
He was born August 9, 1956 in Peoria to Dallas and Virginia (Williams) Hopkins.
Russell is survived by his siblings, Ethel Selvey, Dallas Floyd (Joann) Hopkins, Elaine (Roger) Jorgensen, Mary (Jack Bigelow) Hopkins, Marshall Hopkins, Janet (Mark) Koonce, Darryl (Phuong) Hopkins, and Karen (Charly Eberle) Hopkins; 12 nieces and nephews; 17 great- nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Charles Kevin Hopkins and one sister, Alice Deck.
Russell was an avid camper and hiker, he found solace and adventure in the trails and landscapes of Turkey Run State Park in Indiana. His fondness for the outdoors extended to bird watching, where he delighted in the quiet moments spent observing the natural world.
A lifelong collector, Russell had a curiosity for the things around him. As a lover of nature, rocks and fossils were his go-to. He also enjoyed collectibles from his admiration of stop motion animation. Rankin/Bass Productions such Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas being a couple of his favorites.
His enthusiasm for music was equally boundless, nurtured during his years working at CO-OP Records. There, he shared his profound appreciation for various genres, especially the work of Todd Rundgren, whose music resonated deeply within him. Vinyl was an important medium for him, the turntable was always spinning and no record store was ever left unsearched.
Whether he wanted to be or not, Russell was always the funniest person in the room. His silliness, cheerfulness, and keen observations always put smiles on the faces of those around him. A smile doesn’t do it justice though, more like side hurting laughter. He was a natural entertainer and thrived on it. He was able to read the room and elevate it with his charisma. Events happen in everyone’s life, the craziest events happened to Russell. He took these events, arranged them into hilarious tales, and set them loose for all to enjoy.
Russell was known for his warm spirit and infectious personality, traits that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
