He was born Aug. 31, 1939, in Methodist Hospital, Peoria, to Myrna F. (Lashbrook) and Robert Leon May. He married Carol Ann Shives on May 28, 1965. She preceded him in death on June 18, 2017.
Surviving are one son, Sam; a grandson, Payton; and step-granddaughter, Jazmin Moore, all of Peoria; a brother, Mike (Diane) of Bradenton, FL.; sister-in-law, Mable (George) Tanner of Yates City; and several nieces and nephews, including Michael Todd (Stephanie) May of Meriden, ID; Keith (Deb) Butterfield of Peoria; and Kurt (Sue) Butterfield of Morton.
A 1957 graduate Of Peoria High School and a U.S. Army veteran, Roger completed his bachelor's and master's degrees at Bradley University. He taught in the Peoria Public Schools system for many years, including teaching and coaching wrestling at Peoria High School.
Inspired by Carol's passion for bringing athletic opportunities to girls in Peoria in the 1980s — a time when virtually no girls' sports programs were available — Roger helped her, and others establish the Peoria Girls Sports League in 1982.
After retirement from coaching and teaching, Roger and Carol continued to partner by leading many Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) study groups — especially focused on movie classics and literature.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life is anticipated at a later date. Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
