Robert Earl Giles, 96, formerly of Peoria, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2023, at The Knolls in Oxford, Ohio. He was born on January 30, 1927, in Kenosha, Wisconsin to Theodore A. and Isabelle C. Giles. He married his high school sweetheart, Marian L. Johnston of Creve Coeur, Illinois, on February 1, 1948.
After serving in the US Army Air Corps during WWII, he was employed at Caterpillar Tractor Company. He attended Bradley University on the Gl Bill where he earned his bachelor's degree in physics. He was employed for over 30 years by the Illinois Highway Department as a professional engineer in the Right of Way department and retired in 1987. He loved camping and traveled extensively with his family and the regional Airstream Club International. With his wife, he was a longtime member of Grace Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his brother, William (Annabelle) Giles of Varna; daughter, Nancy L. (Stuart) Steider of Hamilton, Ohio; sons, James R. (Karen) Giles of Brimfield, and Robert T. (Janice) Giles of Colorado Springs; nine grandchildren, Jennifer (Daniel) Rettig, Kathryn (Aaron) Debbink, Nathan (Alisha) Giles, Brandon (Natasha) Giles, Emily (Paul) Jordan, Drew (Allison) Giles, Kaela (Luke) Ketcham, Amy Giles, and Noah Giles; and thirteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 67
years.
Funeral services will be private. Burial take place in Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria. The family has entrusted Davison-Fulton-Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home with arrangements.
