Rachel E. Shepherdson, age 92, of Peoria, passed away suddenly Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017 at 7:27 p.m. at the Unity Point Proctor Medical Center in Peoria. She was born Jan. 20, 1925 in Augusta, IL to Ernest Paul and Maza Marie (Dennis) West. She married C. Edwin Shepherdson Aug. 24, 1946 in Normal, IL. He passed away May 23, 1978 in Peoria. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Lois Silzer and Carol Blake. Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Shepherdson (Larry Garascia) of Deer Park, IL, seven nieces and nephews and several grandnieces and nephews. Rachel earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from Illinois State University. She started her teaching career in 1946 at Lanark High School. She was a Teacher at Dunlap High School from 1947 through 1957. In 1958, she joined the first staff of the new Richwoods Community High School and until 1969 she held business education, counseling and administrative posts. From 1969 until her retirement in 1986 she was the Assistant Principal there. Following her retirement she taught computer education at ICC and at SeniorNet. She was also a freelance editor for the Peoria Journal Star. She was an active member of her church, created computer-generated greeting cards with original poetry, and enjoyed playing bridge. Cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Rachel’s life will be Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017 beginning with visitation at 10 a.m. and service at 11 a.m. at the Forrest Hill United Methodist Church, 706 E. Forrest Hill, Peoria. Davison-Fulton Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Forrest Hill United Methodist Church or the Shepherdson Music Scholarship Fund at Richwoods High School.
