Loren Neil Petersen (96) died May 29 at Proctor Hospital in Peoria, Illinois. Loren was born December 30, 1925, the first child of Ernest and Elsie Petersen. He married Miriam Andersen on December 27, 1952 in Staplehurst, Nebraska.
Loren is survived by his wife Miriam and their three children: David Petersen (Nancy) of Bethesda, Maryland, Margaret (Steve) Matter of Decorah, Iowa and Jane (Rod) Topel of Peoria. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Laura Matter, Andrea Matter, Nathan Matter, James Petersen, Eric Topel and Ryan Topel. Two sisters survive: Elaine Hartwig of Greeley Colorado and Janet Lehnertz of Lakewood, Colorado.
Loren grew up on the plains of eastern Colorado surrounded by a large, warm extended family. He was a graduate of Brush High School in 1943.
He volunteered in the Army Air Corps from January 1944 to May 1946. After graduating from the University of Colorado in 1950 with a degree in mechanical engineering, he worked at Chance Vought Aircraft Co. in Dallas, Texas. Loren and his family moved to Peoria in 1956 when he joined Caterpillar. He enjoyed working there until his retirement.
Loren was a member of First English Lutheran Church. In his retirement he volunteered at Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. He and Miriam enjoyed numerous Elderhostels and vacations with their children and grandchildren.
A family graveside service will be held.
