Peoria - Dr. John E. McGee, age 91, died April 4, 2020 in Peoria. He was born November 25, 1928 in Granite City, IL, the son of James and Anna (Speiser) McGee. He married Margaret Grems on October 17, 1953 and she survives.
He was a retired obstetrician-gynecologist who began a practice with Robert Murphy, MD in July 1960 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. He was board certified and a Fellow of the American College of OB-GYN since 1964. He joined the Valley Clinic there with Drs. Murphy and Robert Kent, MD in 1970 and was on the staff of Sacred Heart Hospital. He was active in the Southeast Iowa Health Systems agency and served as its president in 1975. In 1976, Drs. Murphy, McGee and Kent moved their practice to Burlington, IA and joined the staff at Burlington Medical Center (BMC). Dr. McGee was chief of staff at BMC in 1986. He retired from practice in 1995.
Dr. McGee was also very active in the Fort Madison community serving on the Catholic and Public school boards; he was president of the Ft. Madison School Board in 1969.
Drafted into the United States Navy in 1955, he served as a physician for 2 years, including time in Okinawa, Japan. In retirement, he was a member of the Marine Corp League and served in the color guard for numerous military funerals.
His was an avid golfer and won several golf tournaments beginning at age 16. He was a musician (saxophone and piano) and storyteller. He had a passion for running which he passed on to his children. He also had a passion for fly-fishing, pheasant and quail hunting, and growing roses. He travelled all over the world and took pleasure in visiting his children throughout the US.
Besides his wife, he is survived by 5 sons, Mike (Susan), Cedar Falls, Iowa; Joe (Anne), Palo Alto, California; Brian (Su), Chillicothe, Illinois; James (Joan), Peoria, Illinois; Robert (Heidi), Westport, Connecticut; and 3 daughters, Ann (Ralph) Tyler, Onalaska, Wisconsin; Jane Kruse, Chicago, IL; and Maureen (Clay) Cary, St. Louis, Missouri. He was the proud grandfather of 19 grandchildren and 1 great-grand daughter.
He was a devout Roman Catholic and a member of St. Vincent DePaul parish in Peoria, IL. Services are pending. Davison-Fulton Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
