He was born April 19, 1927, in Edelstein to John F. and Louise (Miller) Baurer. He married Rita (Ryan) Damm on March 2, 1963 in Peoria. She passed away March 12, 2005 in Peoria. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Evalyn Herrmann, Dorothy Walder, and one brother, Willis Baurer.
Survivors include two daughters: Kathryn (Ken) Tompkins of East Peoria, Kimberly (Troy) Erbentraut of East Peoria, two sons: James (Patricia) Damm of Franklin, WI, Kevin (Susan) Baurer of Bartonville, ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one sister, Helen Hoffmann of Roanoke, and two brothers: Art (Joy) Baurer of Princeville, and Ed (Carol) Baurer of Princeville.
John was a Korean War Army Veteran. He worked at Caterpillar Inc. for 42 years, most recently as an inspector, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of the UAW 974, and attended the Apostolic Christian Church in Peoria. He was an avid table tennis player at the Peoria Christian Center winning numerous championships in the Illinois Senior Olympics.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the loving care that dad received from the Salem Unit Staff.
Visitation will be Thursday Feb. 26, 2015 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Davison-Fulton Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria. Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at the Apostolic Christian Church in Peoria. Additional visitation will be one hour prior to the services at church.
Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens in Peoria with Military Honors.
Memorials may be made to the Peoria Christian Center or to Alzheimer’s Research.
