James K. Polk, 77 of Peoria, passed away on November 8, 2016 at his home with his family. Born the son of Charlie and Nellie (Jones) Polk on June 13, 1939 in Memphis, TN; he rose from a modest beginning and overcame childhood illness to be recognized as a dedicated leader for the betterment of his community of Peoria and Central Illinois. For more than 50 years James demonstrated an innate passion for bringing people together to create substantive solutions that dealt with issues such as neighborhood development and involvement, economic development, social services, diversity and civil rights. As a past Peoria County Board member (1972-76 and 1982-85) and Peoria City Councilman of the 1st District (1985-93), James was the first African American to run and win those positions. He has served on the Illinois Central College Board of Trustees since 1997 with 8 years in leadership positions; the Board of Trustees Greater Peoria Mass Transit-City Link 2007-present; the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission for 10 years and Past Chairman; and numerous additional boards and committees. For all of his efforts, James is a recipient of: the 2015 Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce Tom Connor Service Award; 2015 Peoria Magazines Local Legends; and the 2006 Dr. Martin Luther King Commemorative Service Leadership Award. James was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Peoria Downtown Rotary Club and the NAACP. He is survived by his wife Patti, of 17 years; children, Karen (Billy) Raymond, Jonelle (Daniel) McCloud and Rebecca Polk; step-children, Anika (Henry) Florez and Joshua (Gina) Sterling; brother, Sam (Jean) Polk; 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. James was previously married to the former Virginia Kyle and Patricia Stokes. His son, Kevin Polk preceded him in death. Memorial services will be at 6:00 pm Friday, November 18, 2016 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 305 South Madison Park Terrace in Peoria. Memorials may be made to the Peoria Downtown Rotary Club or the Illinois Central College James K. Polk Diverse Faculty Fellows Program.
