He attended Merrifield Grade School and Milton High School where he was strongly influenced by his band teacher who encouraged him to continue to play trumpet. He left Wisconsin to attend Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, where he received a BS in music education. Jim also earned his MS in school administration from Bradley University. While teaching band in Lacon, Illinois, he met his future wife, Floride "Ede" Barnes, and they married on June 6, 1965. She survives along with their two children Beth (Jay) Houlihan, Edelstein and Matthew Kidder, Ottawa; grandchildren Maggie Ann Kidder, Jason Gaughan, Hannah DeBernardi, Ottawa, and Robert Houlihan, Morton.
Jim began his career in retail music in 1965 by joining Byerly Music as a roadman calling on schools and learning about all the products and people that help to build successful programs. By 1974 he wanted to take his expertise to a new level, and he and Ede founded Kidder Music Service. With the help of many wonderful employees and customers the business celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. In addition, Jim was actively involved in both national and local organizations. He served on the board of the National Association of Music Merchants and the board of the National Association of School Music Dealers, serving as its president in 2004 and 2005. Locally, he has been on the board of the Peoria Symphony and the Peoria Symphony Foundation, the Heartland Festival Orchestra, and the Wheels of Time Museum. He loved playing trumpet in the Peoria Area Senior Citizens band. He truly never said no when someone asked him to go or do something, and he never met a stranger.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2025 from 2 pm to 5 pm at Davison Fulton Woolsey Wilton Funeral Home at 2408 W Willow Knolls Dr Peoria, IL. There will be no formal funeral service.
