He was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, September 23, 1949, the first born son of Victor and Ninfa (Cortez) Pena. He married the love of his life, Irma Valadez, on August 12, 1977.
Homer is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, his sons Jason (Katie), Jacob (Jessica), Jeremy, grandson Ayden Halberg, brothers Victor (Gloria), Gabriel (Virginia), Marion, and sister Cindi.
Growing up Homer was an athlete, excelling in football and baseball. He earned accolades at Miller High School as the pound-for-pound strongest weightlifter, in addition to athlete of the year.
After earning his medical degree and completing residency at OSF St. Francis, Homer began working in Family Practice and then spent time in Urgent Care before finding his calling in Occupational Medicine. Homer took a genuine interest in his patients and was a compassionate and dedicated physician. He retired from OSF in 2019.
As a husband and father, Homer set an example by his determination, strong work ethic, and desire to help others. He was an avid supporter of his sons' soccer careers, traveling to tournaments and recording their game most weekends. Dr. Pena was seen as a father figure by many of their teammates. Additionally, Homer enjoyed collecting and fixing things, especially restoring cars.
Homer had a deep love for Jesus and desired others to know and follow Him too. He enjoyed fellowship and worshiping at Northwoods Community Church. Everyone who met Homer experienced his abundant hospitality, caring nature, and fervent love for his family. He was always ready to share words of encouragement, a kind smile, or a prayer.
Homer's visitation will be from 1:00 - 3:00 pm on Sunday, December 18, 2022 with a Celebration of Life service to follow (3:00 pm) at Davison-Fulton-Woolsey-Wilton, 2408 W Willow Knolls Dr., Peoria, Illinois.
