September 1, 1952 – March 6, 2025
With heavy hearts yet grateful spirits, we celebrate the life and legacy of George Edward Lewis, a devoted husband, loving father, cherished son, adored grandfather, loyal brother, and esteemed friend. George was a man of integrity, wisdom, and generosity, always placing faith, family, and community at the center of his life.
Born on September 1, 1952, in Selma, Alabama, to the late Rosie and Wiley Lewis, George was raised with strong values of faith, education, and brotherhood. He was a dedicated member of Greater Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. W. J. Washington and gave his life to Christ at an early age. His commitment to service and leadership was evident in all aspects of his life, including his decision to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a Mason. He was also a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., embracing the principles of brotherhood, charity, and truth that shaped his life.
George was a proud graduate of Austin High School, Class of 1970, where he excelled both academically and athletically. He played football, ran track, and served in the ROTC, embodying discipline and perseverance. His dedication to education and personal growth led him to achieve a significant family milestone—becoming the first male cousin to attend college.
George earned a football scholarship to Eureka College in Eureka, IL, where he graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business. His talent on the field opened doors to play professional football, but he ultimately chose family and career over his love for the sport. This decision reflected his deep commitment to those he loved and his belief in building a stable and fulfilling future.
Following his graduation, George built an exceptional career with Caterpillar Inc., where he served as an executive logistical manager for four decades before retiring. His leadership, work ethic, and dedication left a lasting impact on his colleagues and the company.
Beyond his professional success, George was the heart and foundation of his family. He believed in the power of education, often ensuring that younger relatives had the support they needed to succeed. If you went to college, you likely received a monthly allowance from George! He found great joy in fine dining, traveling, playing golf, and savoring a glass of Glenlivet 12, always sharing laughter and wisdom with those around him. Every morning, without fail, he started his day with a Dunkin’ Donuts coffee—5 creams, 5 sugars—paired with a chocolate donut, a simple ritual that brought him joy and comfort.
On Thursday, March 6, 2025, at 7:48 AM, George’s earthly journey came to a peaceful close, and he was lovingly reunited with his parents, Rosie and Wiley Lewis; his brothers, Wiley Lewis Jr. (Dean Las Vegas, Nevada) and Ronnie Lewis; and his stepson, Todd Mackey, who all entered eternal rest before him and now greet him with love. While his absence leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him, the legacy of his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love will continue to shine through the lives he touched.
Though his presence will be deeply missed, his love and legacy live on through those who cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Patricia Pickett-Lewis (Peoria, IL); his beloved daughters, Angella Lewis (Peoria, IL) and Nikki Lewis (St. Peter’s, MO); his adored baby sister, Damina Lewis (Chicago, IL) ; his five treasured grandchildren, Taren Mackey, Taron Mackey, Tyarra Mackey, Brooklyn Byrd, and Jacob Byrd, whom he loved beyond measure and one Godson Jerrimic Booker Jr. He also leaves behind a special cousin, Gloria Walker, and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will continue to honor his memory.
A special thanks to Illinois Cancer Center, Carle Health Methodist Hospital and OSF Palliative care.
His legacy is one of love, laughter, and a commitment to education and excellence. While we mourn his passing, we also rejoice in the profound impact he made on so many lives.
Rest well, George. Your love, wisdom, and laughter will echo in our hearts forever.
