He was born on November 25, 1938 in Galesburg to the late Earl E. and Kathryn L. (Frakes) Benson. He married Carolyn Allison in January of 1997.
She survives. Gary is also survived by two sons, Todd (Lori) Benson and Troy (Lisa) Benson; three step-daughters, Kari (Wayne) Moses, Deborah Allison and Kristine (Bryan) Biggs; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and one brother.
He was preceded in death by one son, Mark Benson.
Gary was the co-owner of Benson Automotive with his brother and family for many years. He was a car enthusiast.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of Gary's life will be held on Monday, August 16, 2021 from 5-8 p.m. at Cyd's in the Park, 5805 N. Knoxville Rd., Peoria, IL 61614.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Peoria Rescue Ministries to refurbish donated vehicles.
