She was born Aug. 12, 1927 in Peoria to George and Hazel (Follick) Taylor. She married Aubrey “Bud” Ruff on September 9, 1950 in Peoria. He survives along with one son, Dr. John (Mary) Ruff of Peoria, two daughters: Gigi (Stu) Kinkade of Peoria, Jeannine (Steve) McAllister of Chillicothe, four grandsons: Jared Ruff, Dr. Jake (Tory) Ruff, Zach McAllister, and Ward Kinkade, two granddaughters: Aubrey (Jared) O’Brien, Alexis Rhoades-Shindley, and three great-grandchildren: Carter Shindley, Chloe Shindley, and Brage O’Brien.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Delmar and Jack Taylor, and one sister Jane Hamman.
Dorothy was President and co-owner of Bud Ruff Electric with her husband Bud for 30 years. Dorothy was also one of the first minority business owners in the Peoria area.
She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church, where she was a member of the Rebecca Circle for 60 years, a member of the Beta Sigma Phi since Nov. 1953, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a member of the Salvation Army and was President of the Women’s Auxiliary in 1981-82. Also, Dorothy volunteered with the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, educating seniors about the Senior Health Initiative Program.
Dorothy enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, shopping, and attending all her children and grandchildren’s sporting events. Although she owned and operated the businesses with her husband, her family was always first. There was never a time she wasn’t involved in the everyday activities of family life.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be Saturday Sep. 26, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the First English Lutheran Church in Peoria. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at church. Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria is in charge of arrangements.
