Dora (Dodie) McMillan was born on April 6, 1935, in Washington, IL to Claude and Edna McMillan. Throughout her life, Dodie had many fond memories of growing up in Washington. A Washington Community High School graduate, Dora was voted “Most Athletic Girl” and extolled her love of sports to her youngest daughter, Jill.
Dodie married Ronald Addy in 1957 and thus began their life together for 56 years until his passing in 2013. Family life was a large part of their marriage, but we would be remiss if we didn’t highlight her time as a police officer. Dodie was in the first class of female police officers to patrol in Peoria. We were always proud of her time in the force, but as adults, the idea of her being first in line for many women to follow proved what a groundbreaker she was. After years on the force, she left the workforce to raise her family and became a fixture as a room mom, Girl Scout leader, and youth sports fan. When most people her age were retiring, Dodie went back to work when a former co-worker, then Sherriff of Peoria County, asked her to join his team of bailiffs. Our mom LOVED this job and appreciated the stories she heard and the people she met. She retired and had many outings on her beloved bus trips with her daughter and fellow Star Wars superfan Ronda.
Surviving are her daughters, Ronda Addy, Jill Wright (favorite son-in-law, Timothy), and her brother Danny McMillan (Kathy). In addition to her family, Dodie was lucky enough to have an extended “found family,” counting her daughter’s lifelong friends Heidi Stearns, Becky Preston, and Malinda Radloff as some of her favorite people. But no mention of Dodie would be complete without calling out her relationships with her surrogate grandsons – Kaden, Drake, and Garris Radloff. Dodie would also be sure to tell everyone she was the best dog-grandma to her family’s brood - especially Jersey and Moore.
Our family would like to thank Compassus Hospice and Comfort Keepers for making Dodie’s last days peaceful and helping our family navigate this time.
A private memorial service will be held. Instead of flowers, the family requested memorials to the Peoria Heights Volunteer Fire Department. This group of volunteers helped ensure Dora’s safety in her later years, and we will forever be grateful. (https://phvfa.square.site/).
