“Okay, Okayyyy” with a (whatever you say) type of grin and giggle is something you could hear Bernice echo across a room behind a counter in a kitchen. It didn’t matter whose kitchen, just a kitchen. You may find her cleaning greens, cutting fresh vegetables, tasting the fruits of her labor (in a pot), or washing dishes. You will never find her sitting still, unless it's under the big blue sky, or taking up the rays of the sun in a lawn chair while she pets her fur baby to soothe her soul. Every now and again, she may get tired and find a seat at the table or on a comfortable couch, leaned over, elbows on her knees, head resting downward, eyes upward, with a smile on her face. Seeing all her family together- kids, grandkids, great grandkids was the light behind that smile. Never claiming perfection, only LOVE. Never claiming to have done everything right, only the “grace of God”. Never judging another soul, only praying and speaking a “blessed day for you and yours”.
Mama, Grandma was ushered into her next phase of life surrounded by the love of her living children and the spirit of the ones who were called to greet her upon her souls arrival. Bernice claimed perfect imperfection and left her kids with something every parent strives for, unconditional love. The Legacy Bernice has left behind is unconditional love, for love covers a multitude of imperfections and brings light to all that is good.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV
Mommy, Mama, Grandma our hearts ache for your presence, but our soul finds comfort in your peace. Thank you for all the ways you have taught us how to love one another. Thank you for your laughter, your side-eye, your pumpkin pie, and your good ‘ol fashion company. Thank you for never judging us when we missed the mark, or didn’t do all that we could. Thank you for all the times you slapped us behind the head, the hard conversations, and the wet kisses to remind us that everything was always done in love. Thank you for allowing us to take care of you in your final hours and be here to kiss your cheeks through your final breaths. Thank you for being “ours”.
Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Davison-Fulton Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home is assisting the family.
