William “Bill” Smith, age 85 of Pensacola, Florida passed away peacefully on May 17, 2023. He was born December 27, 1937, one of nine children to the late Eason Smith and Leasie Johnson Smith. He is survived by his sisters Deloris McCarty, Ladoria Kelley and Hazel Maples (Tommy) Hamm. He was proceeded in death by his siblings, Eason “EB” Smith, Eulene Smith, Jerrel Smith, Hubert Smith and Lanoria Smith.
Bill started his professional career working for Jones Floor Covering in Pensacola, Florida before being drafted in the U.S. Army. He served active duty from January 1959 to May 1962. On April 14, 1959, while on military leave, he married the love of his life Dianne Shelby. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, he worked in insurance and automobile sales. In 1976, he became an entrepreneur starting two businesses “Bill Smith Auto Sales” and “Smith Rental Properties”.
Bill loved all sports but was especially passionate about softball. He played softball in his thirties with various car dealership teams and started his daughters playing as soon as they could swing the bat. He was Cathy and Donna’s biggest fan. He then went on to coach, sponsor and umpire community and church men, women and co-ed teams. He was very proud to sponsor a women’s professional softball team that competed in state championships for five years. He loved each player like his own family.
Bill’s relaxation time frequently involved water activities. He enjoyed boating and skiing at an early age and surf fishing with Dianne and her mother. He taught many friends and family how to drive a boat, water ski and fish. Not only did he enjoy catching fish, but he also enjoyed frying dinners for friends and family. His favorite was mullet!
Bill is survived by his wife of 64 years, Janet Dianne Shelby Smith and their two daughters.
Catherine “Cathy” Darlene Smith (Dale) Boyd, grandsons Brandon (Jacquelyn) Boyd, Eason (Megan) Boyd, and great grandson Ezekiel Boyd.
Donna Lynne Smith (Rick) Johnston, granddaughters Shelby (Zac) Fox, great grandsons Orrin and baby Fox to-be; Holly (Kolt) Johnson; step grandsons Brandon (Sarah) Johnston, Austin Johnston, and great grandchildren Ethan and Maddie Johnston.
In addition to his immediate family, he cherished his nieces, nephews and the wonderful friends he was blessed with.
Bill rededicated his life to Jesus Christ and was baptized at Brownsville Assembly of God Church in 1979. After moving to Perdido Key, Florida he became an active member, Sunday school teacher and an ordained deacon at Point Baptist Church.
Bill’s treasure was never gold or silver, but rather his Lord and Savior and his beloved family.
