The son of Fred and Mabel(Nobriga) Gouveia, Walter, grew up on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. He was born April 9, 1939, North Kona, Hawaii and graduated Roosevelt High School, Honolulu, Hawaii class of 1957.
At the age of 19 years of age, Walter enlisted in the Army. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of Master Sergeant, E-8.
As part of this service, Walter served in the Vietnam War for two tours. He received National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Civil Action Honor Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal 7th Award, Vietnam Jump Wings, Aircraft Crewman's Badge, Master Parachute Badge.
Walter was an avid athlete; he began surfing, canoeing and swimming at a young age in Hawaii. He was on the Army Swim team and served as a Lifeguard. He was also on the Army Boxing team. In his later years he became a semi-professional bowler, water skier, and golfer. He shared his love of sports with his family teaching them and coaching their teams. Not only did he love participating in sports, he enjoyed watching sports on tv and going to live games with his family.
Walter is known for his strength and tough exterior, those who knew him well would describe him as loyal, compassionate, giving, appreciative, and considerate. He did not want to be a burden and lived independently most of his life.
Walter is survived by his four children, son, Gerald “Jerry” Grant(Kelly), Daughters, Geraldine “Gigi”(Mac) Willetts, Ginger “Grace”(Lance Dixon) Singingheart, Gina(Ricky) Rippstein.
Grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Grant(Brandi-Jordan, Brianna, Logan, Ava and Sophia) Gouveia, Keith(LeeAnn-Sydney and Wilder) Gouveia, Paul(Cynthia-Nicole, Richie, and Savanah) Quina, Aaron(Lindsey-Kane and Ariston) Quina, Christin “Kelly” LaVette(Jakob Gooch, Skyler and Lillian Knapp), Lauren(William-Addison and Emery), Ann Willetts, Maci Willetts, Marissa Skye Singingheart and Jacob Gouveia
Also survived by two siblings, sister, Norma J(Gouveia) Frazer and brother, Michael J Gouveia.
Walter was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Mabel(Norbiga) Gouveia and sister, Barbara “Bobbie” J Rome
A service honoring the life of Walter E. Gouveia is being held on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at 10:30 am. Family and friends are asked to gather at Olive Baptist Church Warrington Campus, 103 W. Winthrop Ave, Pensacola, FL 32507 at 10:00 am and go in procession to Barrancas National Cemetery.
