1927-2014
"Mother Theresa"
Theresa Stanovich was born in Pensacola to Robert Mallory Jones and Annie
Lee Jones in April of 1927, and went to be at rest with the Lord on
September 1st 2014 following a battle with Leukemia. She was predeceased by
her parents and four sisters, Charlotte Stewart, Angie Stearns, Bonnie
Kahler and Betty Ann Jones, as well as her loving husband, MSGT USAF Ret.
Martin P. "Stan" Stanovich in 1981. She is survived by her only son, Marty Stanovich, her beloved
daughter-in-law, Sheryl Dungan Stanovich, her wonderful in-laws Bill and
Melba Dungan, her niece, Linda D. Stearns, her best friend and dear neighbor
Johan O'Dea, and a host of other family, friends and neighbors who all loved
her very much and miss her dearly. She was a 1945 Graduate of J.M. Tate High School, and was a proud retiree of
Gulf Power Company where she worked in the Payroll Department for 23½ years,
retiring to have her son in 1969. As the wife of a PGA Professional, she
and Stan ran the Hill and Dale Par 3 Golf Course on Michigan Avenue from
1967-1977. She was a sales representative for Avon in the years that
followed and also worked at Ginette's Hallmark on Navy Boulevard from
1981-88, when she left to work for the Wilson family at Ferris Moving and
Storage. She continued to work there full-time until the age of 75, and
then part-time until one week before her 80th birthday--when she finally
retired with almost 62 years in the workforce. She was a volunteer for the
USO, a member of Fiesta Frolickers and a former President and Woman of the
Year of the American Business Women's Association's Pensacola Chapter.
She loved to travel, and was blessed to make it to almost every great city
and state in the United States in her long full life. A huge sports fan,
she especially enjoyed Florida State Football, attending dozens of home,
away and bowl games through the years, including FSU's first National
Championship in 1993. From the first pitch of opening day in 2012, she
regularly attended Blue Wahoos Baseball at the Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.
Her family would like to offer a special thanks to Quint and Rishy Studer
and the entire Wahoos family for making those great days possible, and for
her favorite usher, Terry, who always met and escorted her from her car door
to her season seat atop section 102 at every home game she attended.
She lived life to the fullest and in great health until the last few weeks,
in great part to her GP, Dr. David Smith, her Medical Oncologist, Dr. Harish
Malhotra and the staff of the Sacred Heart Cancer Center-a special thanks to
the nurses there in the infusion clinic-she always looked forward to seeing
them and they showered her with friendship and love-and never once did it
feel like she was battling cancer. Visitation will be Sunday, September 7th from 4-6 PM at Oak Lawn Funeral
Home, 619 New Warrington Road. Graveside Service will be Monday, September
8th at 12:30 PM at Barrancas National Cemetery, Pastor Gordon Godfrey
officiating, and interment to follow. Active Pallbearers will be Robert Callaway, Greg Davis, Chris Gonsulin, Vinh
Le, Steve O'Dea and Jason Young. Honorary Pallbearers are Bill Bass, Steve
Bobe, Billy Brent, Lyn Hart, Dick Mead and Grady Wilson. In lieu of flowers, it was one of Theresa's final wishes that a scholarship
be established in order to send a deserving young lady to college to pursue
higher education-an opportunity she never had. Contributions in her memory
can be made to the Theresa J. Stanovich Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of
The First Tee of Northwest Florida, P.O. Box 12303, Pensacola, FL 32592.
