Suzanne Alice (Smith) Wernick, age 91, peacefully passed away at her Pensacola home on Sunday morning, April 24, 2022. Susie was born December 29, 1930 in Toledo, Ohio to Arthur Rood Smith and Cecile Vivian Wilson. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 70 years, Ned Wernick.
A National Honor Society student at Scott High School in Toledo, she attended The Ohio State University, where she met and married her lifelong companion Ned. They began their journey in Toledo, then on to Flint, Michigan and Fort Smith, Arkansas as Ned pursued his career with the Mead Paper Company. In 1982, they chose the sunshine and sugar sands of Pensacola, Florida as their home for their retirement years
Forever Buckeyes, you could count on the scarlet and gray colors to be hanging proudly on the front porch most Saturdays during the Fall. They shared an adventurous spirit which led Susie and Ned to travel the world. Many memories were made during their annual trek to Puerto Vallarta to celebrate their anniversary.
Suzanne was an avid, self-proclaimed stay-at-home mother who loved her four children dearly, yet found the time to pursue many civic and social activities outside of the home, serving most recently as a docent for the Naval Air Museum and the Pensacola Historic District.
Susie always considered herself to be a moderate and was dedicated to advancing political agendas that would benefit all people. In Michigan, she worked for the George Romney gubernatorial campaign and the Barry Goldwater campaign for the US Presidency. She continued her political involvement in Arkansas as a member of the League of Women Voters, Chairwoman of the Sebastian County Republican Committee, and as President of the Arkansas Federation of Republican Women.
A talented artist, seamstress, proud member of the Pensacola Quilt Guild and together with Ned, a long-time exhibitor at the Greater Gulf Coast Arts Festival. Susie will be remembered for her paintings, arts and crafts, and quilting gatherings with her Pensacola friends, The Red Hens, and especially for the beautiful quilts she made for her children and grandchildren, which she proudly displayed over the years at the Greater Gulf Coast Arts Festival.
Suzanne is survived by her sons Max (Mary Ann) and Joel (Lyndy), and daughters Linda Del Carlo and Amy Braden, together with eleven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and Snoopy, her loyal canine companion.
The family gratefully acknowledges the professional and loving care provided to Susie by her VITAS hospice support team led by Leanne Lefleur and her daily caregivers at TLC.
Funeral arrangements are being provided by Oaklawn Funeral Home. A joint ceremony honoring Suzanne and Ned will be conducted on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at 2:30pm at the Barrancas National Cemetery, NAS Pensacola.
For those desiring to remember Susie, in lieu of flowers, the family would suggest making a gift of time and/or treasure in her memory to the Pensacola Habitat for Humanity or the Greater Gulf Coast Arts Festival, https://pensacolahabitat.org/donate and https://www.ggaf.org/page/the-art-show.
