Ruth Robertson, 93, passed away on July 16, 2014. Throughout her life, she would often reminisce about her years playing in the fields and creeks with her brothers and cousins near their childhood home in Headland, Alabama. She would also like to tell stories about the one-room schoolhouse where her love for learning began.
She married Askew Odom in 1938 and had two daughters, Wanda and Tannie. In 1947, she married James (Jim) Allan Robertson and they lived in Annapolis, Maryland and Jacksonville, Florida before returning to Pensacola, Florida for the rest of their 28 years of marriage. She and Jim had three children; Lynda, Jim (Sonny), and Beverly.
Ruth dedicated her life to raising her five children, instilling in them the value of education and promoting self-confidence with a can-do spirit. She excelled at raising a bountiful garden, growing beautiful flowers, and expertly sewing stylish clothing for her four daughters. In her later years, she took great comfort in reading all genres of books, often reading favorite titles more than once.
Preceding Ruth in death were her parents, Lang and Eva Herring; husband, Jim; daughter, Tannie Meador; grandson, Dru Meador; sister, Helen Granberry; and brothers, Jack and Bud Herring.
She is survived by her four children, Wanda Robertson of Ragland, Alabama; Lynda Robertson (Johnny Evers) of Navarre, Florida; Jim Robertson (Nancy Price) of Pace, Florida; and Beverly Schrenger (David) of Smyrna, Georgia; two grandchildren, Tino Fernandez and Diana Anz-Meador; three great grandchildren; Tannie Anz-Meador, Libby Fernandez, and Elaina Fernandez; and special friends Johnny and Janet Reithmiller.
The family wishes to thank the staff at The Haven of Our Lady of Peace for all the support, dedication and loving care that they provided, especially Ann, Jennifer, Tiffany and Kathy.
Ruth was laid to rest with her husband Jim at Barrancas National Cemetery on Monday, July 21, 2014. Because of the wonderful care she received during her last weeks, the family requests that donations be made in her name to The Haven in lieu of flowers. Oak Lawn Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.
