He graduated from Edmonson High School, Baltimore, MD and enlisted in the US Navy serving as a Yeoman. His 22 year career took him on numerous tours of duty including Washington, DC, Norfolk, VA, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Da Nang, Vietnam. He ultimately attained the rank of Senior Chief and retired in 1981. He received numerous decorations including the Purple Heart and the Navy Achievement Medal.
After retirement he enjoyed auto maintenance, fly fishing, and woodworking. He travelled as an upholsterer for churches and a volunteer driver for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Roy eventually began a new career as "YoYo D'Clown." He was a member of Blue Lodge and was a Shrine Clown serving a term in the office of Secretary of Clowns for the Florida State Shrine Association. He was well known for his balloon creations. He worked at several local establishments doing balloons, clowning, and magic and had his own business entertaining at children's parties and events.
Roy was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Turner, his step-father, Charles L. Manning, his mother Laura Adell (See) Manning and a daughter Terrie Lynne Burton.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Harriette and his daughter Elizabeth (Phil) Bearman of Shrewsbury, PA. He leaves behind his brothers John, of Westminster, MD, and Stanley "Tony" (Betty), of Moorefield, WV, his half-brother Charles Michael "Tab" (Nancy) Manning of Cross Junction, VA, as well as a daughter Yvonne Norris, a son-in-law Tracy Burton of Vincent, AL and 6 grandchildren. His memory will be especially cherished by the John Sullivan family of Pensacola as well.
A memorial graveside service will be held at Barrancas National Cemetery at 1:30pm on December 27, 2018.
