He was born on March 6, 1940 in Milwaukee, WI, to Purdy and Lois Meigs. He grew up in Albuquerque, NM, where he fell in love with exploring the desert, mesas and hunting arrowheads, snakes and artifacts.
He graduated from Highland High School, Albuquerque, NM, in 1958. He enlisted in the US Navy shortly thereafter.
He spent 20 years in the United States Navy and was stationed with his wife and children in Florida, California, Maine, Tennessee and Virginia and finally Pensacola, FL where the military sent him to Pensacola Junior College. At PJC he received a Drafting Design Technology degree in 1972. He retired with honors from the Navy as an Aviation Electrician Chief in 1978.
While in the military he was stationed aboard the USS John F. Kennedy. He was aboard the Kennedy when it collided with the USS Belknap on November 22, 1975 off the coast of Italy. He often spoke of the incident as a horrific accident in which several sailors lost their lives.
He was a curious, tenacious and personable individual. He literally never met a stranger. He loved and respected his children and grandchildren. And though he could be as mean as the devil, he had a sweet, soft side as well. He loved fishing, painting and restoring old Camaros.
