Ouida Mae Cantwell Bullock was born in Tylertown, MS on August 23, 1934, to Alvin Brown and Dixie Owens Cantwell. Ouida was one of six children. Inez, Paul, Jake and Sue Ainsworth have passed. Betty Jean Cantwell survives and now resides in Texas.
Ouida attended and achieved a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics from Southern Mississippi University.
Ouida met Norman Bullock while attending “Southern”. Ironically, they both grew up in Tylertown but did not meet until college. Norman was smitten from the beginning and courted her persistently to have her as his wife. They married in December of 1955 and moved to Florida.
Ouida worked for a year as a teacher until her first daughter was born. Rhonda Gale Bullock Dabney was born in 1956, and Kathy Suzanne Bullock Truxillo was born in 1958. Michael Jay Bullock was born in 1960 but tragically died after 2 days. His loss was felt throughout her life.
After living in Pensacola, the family relocated to Lake City, FL in 1969. Ouida was an active member of Parkview Baptist Church as well as doing substitute teaching as a PE aide.
In 1975 there was another move to Houston, TX. Ouida came to love Houston and Texas and was actively involved in the Mother’s Day Out Program at Sugar Creek Baptist Church.
Finally, Ouida and Norman made the decision to move back to Pensacola in 1984 to build their final home. Ouida was very proud of her home and was grateful to live there for 36 years. She spent a lot of time and work in her yard determined to have it look just so! Ouida actually still mowed her yard into her early 80’s.
Ouida loved her Olive Baptist Church family and was very involved in numerous programs over the years.
Sadly, Ouida nursed Norman until his death in 2003. This event gave Ouida the freedom to live life on her terms until dementia altered her life.
Ouida also loved all her immediate family. Outside of her daughters she loved her Sons-In-Law, Thomas Dabney of Lancaster, SC and Jerry Truxillo of Pensacola, Fl. They both exhibited love and respect as well as providing through their hard work for her daughters and grandchildren. Jerry is especially cherished because of all he did for her in the last 5 years of her life.
Having grandchildren is life’s greatest blessing and Ouida was blessed to have 2 grandsons and 2 granddaughters. Justin Michael Dabney of Richmond, VA, T. Alex Dabney of Lancaster, SC, Kellie Ann Truxillo of Austin, Tx and Amanda Claire Truxillo Adetu (Michael Adetu – Husband) of Pearland, TX were her heart.
Ouida was also the great grandmother of Zion Adetu and Everly Adetu.
She will forever be remembered in our hearts and souls. Ouida raised strong, independent women and mothers. The words that most come to mind when thinking of her are: “Mrs. Clean” (LOL), Independent, Sweet, Kind, Devout and Spry (keeping up with her was hard).
Ouida passed peacefully to be in the arms of our Lord on February 6, 2022, at the age of 87 years old. May she Rest in Peace!
