1930 – 2017
Marie A. Wood was gloriously reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband of over 61 years, Lee (“Woody”), February 15 , 2017.
Marie was born February 2, 1930 in Washington, D.C. to Ella Grace and William Edgar Adams. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers George and Dennis, her sisters Thelma, Jean and Florence, dear son-in law Wayne Jernigan, and the love of her life, Woody. She is survived by her beloved daughters Sandra Jernigan, Susan (Joe) Zayas and Sharon (John) Barber; grandchildren Leigh-Ann (Patrick) Huber, Kenneth (Linda) Jernigan, Joey Zayas, and Royce and Robert Barber; and great-grandchildren Wyatt and Gavin Huber, and Andrew, Natalie, Benjamin and Timothy Jernigan (and another great grandson due in July), honorary family members Sue and John Erickson and daughter Kimberly (Jason) Smith, as well as many dear nieces and nephews.
Marie met her husband, Woody, at a skating rink in San Diego, CA when Woody literally knocked her off her feet. They were married October 21, 1950 in Elizabeth City, NC, and Marie became a devoted Navy wife, raising a family, moving to various naval stations, eventually retiring in Pensacola.
Marie and Woody traveled extensively around the country in their motor home, and participated in many activities including square and round dancing and bowling. Marie was an excellent secretary working at Remington Rand in Norfolk, VA, returning to work when her youngest daughter started high school, ending her career in the Physical Sciences Department at Pensacola Junior College where she was most proud to have hand-picked one son-in-law. She was a superb bridge and hand-and-foot card player, loved her home-made butter pecan ice cream and never missed an opportunity to play the slots at the casinos.
She was a very generous and loving person and dedicated her life to her family. She will be greatly missed by her family and all those who were blessed to have known her.
Visitation will be at Eastern Gate Memorial Funeral Home on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017 at 2:00-3:00 p.m. with services to immediately follow. Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Kenneth Jernigan, Patrick Huber, Joey Zayas, Royce Barber, and Robert Barber, and her dear friend, John Erickson.
