Luther James "Jim" Chancy, aged 81, passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on September 21, 2024, in Pensacola, Florida. Born on March 13, 1943, in Hollywood, Florida, Jim was a cherished figure in his community, known for his vibrant storytelling and warm presence.
Jim proudly served in the US Army Infantry from June 1962 until April 1965, dedicating himself to his country with honor and courage. After his military service, he embarked on a notable career in law enforcement with the Tallahassee Police from 1968 to 1973. Jim's commitment to education and justice led him to Pensacola Junior College, where he inspired many as an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and US History from 1974 until his retirement in 2006.
He was a lifelong learner, holding degrees from Tallahassee Community College, Florida State University, and Eastern Kentucky University. Jim's passion for travel saw him exploring the country in his RV, creating lasting memories with friends and family.
Jim's legacy is carried on by his daughter Cheryl Hempfleng and her husband Bill, grandsons Dylan Miller, Logan Hempfleng, and Cole Miller; sister Linda Kaster; beloved nephew John Chancy and great-nephew Tanner Chancy; beloved cousin Dottie Maxwell, her husband Tim, and their daughter Michele; along with his "daughter #3" Pam Reynolds and special friend Marty Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Darsey and Luther M. Chancy; his beloved wife Beverly Chancy; siblings Lawrence M. Chancy and Loraine Halloran; first wife Faye Lisk, daughter Janice Miller, and grandson William Hylar Hempfleng.

Much appreciation to Jim's Vitas Hospice team who willingly put up with his unrelenting antics with smiles & laughter. We couldn't have cared for Daddy without you: Linda, Sunday, Dawn, Liz, Lara, Emily and Chaplain Andy.
A service to honor Jim's life will be held at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel in Pensacola, FL, at a later date. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Vitas Hospice or Amazing Grace Bully Rescue, honoring Jim's compassionate spirit.
Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel is assisting the family during this time, ensuring that Jim's memory is cherished and celebrated according to his wishes and the love he shared with so many.
