Larry passed away on Wednesday, July 20th, at 1:15 am, after a courageous fight with Lung Cancer. “Papi” Larry, or “Daddeo”, will be missed greatly by his family.
He is survived by (Son’s) Larry Wayne, Russell and (Daughter’s) Wendy and Mandy, as well as numerous precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Larry was born and grew up until the age of 16 in Okmulgee, OK. The youngest of 11 children, he excelled academically and starred while playing football at Okmulgee High School as an offensive lineman. After his junior year in Okmulgee, his family moved from Oklahoma to Odessa, Texas, where he graduated from high school. Working after high school in the West Texas oil fields for a year, he then decided to join the US Navy, alongside his older brother Joe, in 1962. They both were trained as Yeomen, then reported together to their first duty station in Rhode Island.
Larry retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, after 24 years of faithful, patriotic, and honorable service, in 1986. His duty assignments included OCS Newport NS Rhode Island, Naval Reserve District New York, Miramar NAS, USS SOUTHERLAND(DD-743), Naval Support Activity New Orleans and Naval District Washington D.C.
He was predeceased by his father Clyde David Hedrick, his mother Polly Pearl Farrer, his step-son Timothy Kiter, and numerous loving brothers and sisters.
Larry was an extremely generous man who loved to play and later watch sports with his family. He had an amazing unusually sharp memory and could recall and share sports events from time past. He was also an amazing trivia buff and was known to be untouchable in that realm. His absence will be tough for all of us.
A Visitation for Larry will be held Tuesday, August 9, 2022 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, 619 New Warrington Road, Pensacola, FL 32506. A Memorial Service will follow from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, with Graveside Service from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm at Barrancas National Cemetery.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.oaklawnfunerals.com for the Hedrick family.
