1940-2022
June Elaine Bullock Jones, 81, passed away early March 9, 2022, with family by her side. June was born on September 6, 1940, in Tylertown, Mississippi, to Virgil and Maude Bullock who are deceased. June was the only daughter and youngest child with three brothers, Vernon, Rex and Marlon Bullock, all deceased. June’s childhood through moving to college was spent helping her parents with the daily chores on the family dairy farm. June spoke of fond memories like going to town once a week with her parents, visiting with extended family members on Sundays after church, and playing on the property using her imagination. June grew up in Dinan Baptist Church, where singing in the church was a major portion of her upbringing.
After graduating from Tylertown High School, June attended what is now Southwest Mississippi Community College and transferred to The University of Southern Mississippi to complete her education in Business Teacher Education. June taught at Ruckel Middle School in Niceville, Florida, and eventually began three years of teaching in the Business Department at Escambia High School in Pensacola, Florida.
It was during this time when June met and would marry, U.S. Naval Flight Officer, C.S. (Reef) Jones. Following a brief engagement, they were married in July 1966, and celebrated their 55th anniversary in 2021. As far back as a little girl, June had looked forward to being a mother and after her children, Tracy Jones Potter and David Jones, were born her focus was being a homemaker and mom. Cooking was one of June’s gifts and growing up in the south, dishes like chicken and dumplings, homemade biscuits and tomato gravy were favorites. She also loved to bake and her giant box of handwritten recipes will be passed down and treasured. Maude, June’s mom, taught her how to sew as a child and over the years, she sewed dresses for herself and Tracy, plus made Tracy’s Barbie and doll clothes. The sewing continued on when June became a grandma, sewing blankets, pajamas, and little outfits for the grandchildren.
When Tracy and David were older, June returned to the workforce and taught for several years at Coastal Training Institute, where she met her best friend, Ami. Although June had been a homemaker for 16 years, she quickly became acclimated and looked forward to the new phase in her life. Teaching students skills to help them find better employment was very important and fulfilling to June.
Myrtle Grove Baptist Church was a special part of June’s life. Throughout 30 years June taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, served in the clothing room, and was a regular member of the Red Hat’s Society and Keenagers. She had many friends at church that became very special over the years. June enjoyed making others laugh and wearing light up necklaces and flashy jewelry brought many smiles. Myrtle Grove Baptist was a place where June felt important and after her health started failing and she could no longer attend, church was the one thing she kept hoping to do.
After June and Reef retired, they enjoyed numerous trips across the country, pulling an r.v., gone for weeks at a time. Some of these trips included visits to their grown children’s homes in Lakeland, Florida, Rhode Island, Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. Other times the trips included visits to Reef’s home in Iowa, but probably the happiest place for June was visiting Tylertown, where she was raised. The fifth wheel was parked on the property June inherited, tucked back under the trees, and countless long weekends and enjoyed the quiet and the still. She felt at home, where she grew up and had so many fond memories.
In addition to many friends who loved June, her family will miss her tremendously. June adored her family and truly valued her title as grandma (MawMaw). She is survived by husband, C.S. (Reef) Jones; daughter, Tracy Jones Potter; son, David Jones (Taryn); grandchildren, Sarah Potter, Daniel Struxness (Ashley); Anna Lynn Struxness Stark; Wesley Potter; Finnegan Jones and great-grandson, Nolan Struxness.
June’s family wants to thank the staff at Lifecare Center of Pensacola, for the incredible care and devotion their wife and mom received over the last 3.5 years. June was treated like family by the cna’s, nurses, and many others, who became very close to her. Reef, Tracy and David also want to thank Covenant Care Hospice for helping them to prepare for June’s passing and ensuring she was kept comfortable for the last week of her life.
Services celebrating June’s life will be held at Oak Lawn Funeral Home in Pensacola, Florida, on March 25, 2022. Visitation will begin at 12:15, with the memorial service beginning at 1:15. June’s family would like to invite and welcome as many people as possible to be a part of this celebration of their wife and mother’s life. If June touched your life and you have memories to share, we would love to hear them. Mom is now reunited with her parents, brothers and so many others mom adored, who passed before her.
