Joseph L. Walsh U.S.N., Retired, 88, passed away on January 4, 2015. He was born in New York City in 1926, and moved to New Rochelle, New York and then to Pensacola, Florida in 1960. Walsh enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and retired in 1963. He served on PHIB TRA Base – Solomons, Maryland. – Camp Bradford, Virginia, - U.S.S. Rochester (CA-124) – U.S.S. Toledo (CA – 133) – U.S.S. Pittsburg (CA-72) – U.S.S. Antietam (CVA-36) and the U.S.S. Jonas Ingram (DD-938). He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal with gold 5 stars Medal, China Service Medal, Occupation Medal, World War II, and National Defense Medal. Then in 1964 he worked for NAS Pensacola Public Works, retiring in 1983. He then spent 12 years as a security guard for the Riviera Condominiums.
Survivors include his Wife; Norma (Williamson) Walsh of Pensacola, Daughter; Joann Kane, Granddaughters; Chandra Ann Guntner (Walt) of Cantonment Fl, Kelly and Juliann of Palm Bay, Florida. Grandson; William Jason Cook (Jennifer), Great-Grandson; William Ashton Cook, Great-Granddaughter; Miah Guntner of Cantonment, Fl, Alyssa Cook of Cantonment FL, Aunt Anna Mae Walsh and Marianne Elmore from Coral Gables, Florida,Cousin; Barbara Weber, Morristown, Tennessee, Brother-in-law; Gordon Williamson of Baldwin, MO, and three nieces.
He is preceded in death by his mother Agnes in 1929 and his father William in 1953 and Sons; Timothy Walsh of Annapolis, Maryland & James Walsh of Lothian, MD and Step Daughter; Linda Cook of Cantonment.
Walsh was a member of the Warrington Elks, he was very active both State and Lodge Committees and in 1992 was appointed Vice President of the Northwest District of Fla. And in 1993 he was appointed District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler. He was a life member and also served as President of both Lodge and District Exalted Ruler Associations. He was awarded the 50 pin in November 2012.
Walsh was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Association with a fifty year in December 2010, Branch 22, The American Legion Post #240 and the Disabled American Veterans (a life member). He held a life membership from the Greater Pensacola Bowling Association in 1990. Walsh enjoyed hockey since they started in 1990, selling 50/50 chances to fans. “Go Ice Flyers”
