Lieutenant Junior Grade Joseph Michael Sawicki, devoted son to Kristina Sawicki, was born on August 14, 1992 in Naperville, Illinois and passed away on October 11, 2018 in Jacksonville, Florida. Joseph was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Janina (Miszkiewicz) Sawicki and Jozef Sawicki. Joseph is survived by his uncles Peter Sawicki, Robert Sawicki and Mark (Jennifer) Mayo-Sawicki, his Aunt Anna (Paul) Stanley and his cousin Mieczyslaw (Mitch) Kacprzyk.
Upon graduating from Loyola University of Chicago with a degree in biophysics, Joseph chose to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy on September 26, 2015. He attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and received his commission as an Ensign on May 27, 2016. LTJG Sawicki reported to Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida for Aviation Preflight Indoctrination and training as a Naval Flight Officer in June of 2016 with Training Squadron FOUR. He mastered the Undergraduate Military Flight Officer syllabus and earned his coveted "Wings of Gold" on December 14, 2017.
LTJG Sawicki went on to report to Patrol Squadron THIRTY (VP-30), NAS, Jacksonville, Florida for training on the P-8A Poseidon in February 2018 and successfully completed the syllabus in September 2018. LTJG Sawicki's personal awards included the National Defense Service Medal and Pistol Marksmanship Medal.
A memorial service will be held for LTJG Sawicki at the Pensacola NAS Chapel on Thursday, November 1 at 9:30 a.m., followed by his Inurnment at Barrancas National Cemetery at 10:30 a.m.
