John William Zeigler, passed peacefully at home surrounded by friends and family on Feb. 05, 2016. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1938, and soon afterwards, married Beryl Cristadoro in New Orleans. During WW2 he volunteered to serve as an infantryman in the India-China-Burma Road campaign. For distinguished and heroic achievement, for courage under fire, he was awarded The Bronze Star. After WW2, he served a total of 35 years in the United States military and Civil Service. He retired from the USAF with the rank of Master Sergeant. He then worked in Engineering as Fire Chief at Ramey AFB Puerto Rico until 1972. He received The Command Award for Valor after extinguishing a fire atop a 250,000 gallon fuel tank which imperiled nearby B-52s and KC-135s. He thought his purpose was to be of service where he was needed. He volunteered with The Red Cross at the Navy Hospital Pensacola for many years. He was an avid golfer. He was a beloved husband, father, grand- and great-grandfather. John was predeceased by his wife Beryl; his parents; three brothers, and a sister. He is survived by his daughter, M. Elaine Mann and husband Robert; his grandson, Chad Ylhainen and wife Kim; and great grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua, and Elizabeth. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, and a very special family friend, Connie Roche. Services will be held at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Tuesday, Feb 9th at 11 AM. The Holy Rosary will begin at 11:30 AM with mass at 12 PM, followed by interment at Barrancas National Cemetery at 1:15 PM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Red Cross.
