James J. Rollins, Cdr. U.S.N., Ret., 86, left us suddenly on May 11, 2015, and the world became a little dimmer. Born June 9, 1928 in Ithaca, NY, he worked hard to become a Naval Academy graduate and boxer, a Navy pilot, and a hurricane hunter. His 31 year naval career took him and his family many places, the most interesting of which were the Panama Canal Zone and Midway Island. He was a great man, father, grandfather and friend, loved by many, who believed in hard work, honesty, never living beyond your means, and that a man’s word is something you can take to the bank.
He leaves behind Bobby Ruth Rollins, his bride of 61 years. They shared a deep love for each other and their family. Left to live out his legacy are his four sons and best friends: Ken (Marcia), Bob (Rhonda), Pat (Patsy), TJ (Trish). After his retirement, the main focus of his life was his grandchildren - the (spoiled) treasures of his heart: Kevin (Tara), Kelli, Scott (Mariah), Stephanie, Tiffany, Eric, Tyler, Jay & Lili; as well as great grandchildren Kade, Knox & Madi. He was preceded in death by his parents Harry & Florence Rollins.
Services will be Friday, Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens with visitation at 9:00, funeral at 10:00, officiated by Rev. Tony Cooper of Birmingham, AL. Those given the honor of escorting this great man to his final resting place are his grandsons Kevin, Scott, Eric, Tyler & Jay, and Daniel Finelli.
