Jimmy grew up in the Warrington area of Pensacola and he attended local schools. He was quite the rascal when he was a kid, as I'm sure many could attest. At 19 Jimmy was drafted into the Army and was in Vietnam from November 1968 to November 1969. He was a proud combat soldier, never talking much about the war but it haunted him the rest of his life.
In 1970 he married his wife of 52 years, Denise. They have a son and daughter together, Jimbo and Jamie.
Jimmy worked for L&N/CSX Railroad for many years before an injury forced him to retire in 2002.
Jimmy and Denise eventually moved their family to Lillian, Alabama where he built their dream home, a log cabin. He lived and loved the simple life. Raising chickens and birds was his passion in life, but his family always came first.
Jimmy is predeceased by his father Jack Metz Sr., mother Lena Mary Metz, brother Jack Metz Jr., and nephew Buddy Metz.
Jimmy leaves behind his loving wife Denise, son Jimbo, daughter Jamie Pugh, his son-in-law John Pugh whom he loved as his own, grandchildren Stephanie Lawhorn (Nick) who lovingly called him Sasquatch, Jay Metz (Kayla), Blake Metz (Samantha), Riley-Anne Pugh, Sarah Pugh who he loved to call Muffin. He also had five great grandchildren, Sawyer-Ann and Carter Metz, Corwin and Briggs Lawhorn and Adaleigh Metz, and niece Patty Metz, he also leaves behind numerous cousins and many friends.
To know Jimmy was to love him. He was the protector of his family and everyone he loved and cared about and will be missed by all. Rest easy my love. I'm sure you, Jack, and Buddy are fishing on a beautiful river. Be sure to keep Jack out of the trees.
A Visitation for James will be held Saturday, November 26, 2022 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, followed by a Memorial Service from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.
