Horace "Ace" Glenn King

Horace “Ace” Glenn King was born on March 21, 1919, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Fred Weaver King and Pearl Ruth King, and peacefully went home to our Lord on February 24, 2018. He was the second of four children and is survived only by his younger sister, Eleanor Sanger of Knoxville. His wife of 53 years, Rose Marie King, died in 1998, and he is survived by his beloved Sue Andrews, who shared his life and devoted herself to loving and caring for Ace for the last sixteen years.

He has four daughters, Nancy Wise Norman (Max) of Pensacola, Patti Taylor (Nicky) of Marietta, Georgia, Laura Greer (Jimmy Myers) of Skiatook, Oklahoma, and Nancy Carol Spieth of Irmo, South Carolina. He was blessed with eight grandchildren, Whit Wise (Leslie), Jena Marie Wise (Robert Bassett), Russell Wise (Jill), Landon Taylor (Alanna), Clint Taylor (Alexandra), Jennifer Greer, Sandy Spieth, and Mary Spieth. Ace has twelve great-grandchildren, Alton, Evans and Eleanor Wise, Roman, Reid and Ruby Bassett, Raleigh, Nell and Jack Wise, Landon and Caitlin Taylor, Noah Taylor, Alyssa, Brayden, and Alexis Greer, and numerous nieces and nephews. Ace also loved his poodle, Toby.

Ace grew up in Knoxville and has always been a faithful Tennessee Volunteer fan, especially of the girls’ basketball team. He joined the US Navy in 1943 and was stationed in Pensacola where he was a radioman on a Navy PBY aircraft as a submarine hunter until his release in 1945. He earned a private pilot’s license and enjoyed flying in his younger days. Ace was a passionate golfer and earned his nickname after shooting a hole in one at Osceola Golf Course. He took pride in caring for his home and yard and with the help of Marie always had prize winning flowers and lawn. He enjoyed playing bridge and poker with his First Methodist Church friends and was a member there for almost 65 years. As a Shriner he volunteered to drive children and their families to Tampa for medical treatment. He was a hardworking provider for his family and retired from Independent Life as an insurance agent. Ace was also a member of the Civitan Club. He will be greatly missed by his family.

Services will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home on New Warrington Road. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00am. The funeral is from 11:00-11:30am followed by a procession to Barrancas National Cemetery at 12 Noon. Reception to follow after at Oak Lawn Funeral Home.
