Harold E. Everitt “Papa”, 89, a native of Pensacola, Florida passed away August 25, 2011 of natural causes.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ann D. Everitt, two daughters. Paula L. Carter of Pensacola and Victoria E. Griffin, of Fishers, Indiana; Four grandchildren, Katie Catalani (Sam), Jennifer Kelley (Travis), Carly Griffin, and Brian Griffin, and five great-grandchildren; Connor, Cooper, and Olivia Catalani and Ryan and Claire Kelley.
Harold grew up in the Seville Square area and had many fond memories of his childhood running the streets of Pensacola. He went to Eliza Jane Wilson and P.K. Young schools, and was very proud of his heritage in Pensacola.
He joined the Navy in 1942 and was very proud to be a veteran of three wars; WWII, the Vietnam War, and the Korean War. After he retired from the Navy, he settled his family in Pensacola and started a second career as a supervisor at Sacred Heart Hospital and spent his free time fishing on the waters of the Gulf – even getting a commercial fishing license to further his love of fishing. He was very proud to share this love with his family. He loved to cook for his family and was very proud of his ability to provide great fried fish as part of his gift.
After retiring from his second career, he was able to spend more time fishing and even took daily trips to the Naval Air Station sea wall to see what everyone was catching each day. Harold never met a stranger….he made many friends on his daily trips to the sea wall and also to the Navy Commissary. He enjoyed his regular workouts at the Corry Station Wellness Center, which became a big part of his senior life. The friends and employees at the Wellness Center held a very special place in his heart. He also looked forward to his weekly visits with his four nephews, Kurt Bonifay, Richard Everitt, Mike Everitt, and George Everitt, at the Warrington Hardees. Harold loved to be out visiting people rather than staying home. During his later years, he would even bring a disposable camera with him to take pictures of anything special that caught his attention. He loved life and loved sharing his life with anyone that was willing to listen to one of his great stories.
Harold spent his last year at Homestead Village and was especially fond of the people who took care of him in building “K” and “E.” He wanted nothing more than to be in his own home, but we do want to thank the special friends he made while living there.
A special thanks to the ICU department of the Pensacola Naval Hospital where they gave such love and care to him during his last few days.
Memorial services will be on Tuesday, August 30 @ Oak Lawn Funeral Home in Warrington from 5-6 pm. Internment with Full Military Honors will be at Barrancas National Cemetery at a later date.
