He is survived by the love of his life, Martha Ann (Slinn) with whom he shared 58 1/2 wonderful years of marriage. Together they raised three children, Kathleen Koontz (David Mungai), Christine (Troy) Sensenich and Stephen Koontz. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Nichole, James, Amanda (Jeremy), Baileigh, Creighton, Asher, Edan; four great-grandchildren: Jaxyn, Mikayleigh, Avery, Theo; and sister, Kathleen (Ron) Meredith. He is preceded in death by brother, David Koontz.
George was born on August 28, 1944, in Pittsburgh, PA to the late George Melvin and Sara Anderson Koontz. He spent his childhood in Winter Park, FL. He attended the University of Florida where he majored in Industrial Engineering and became a brother in Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. It was at UF that he and Martha met and fell in love. Upon graduating with honors in December 1965, George and Martha married and moved to Lancaster, PA, where he began his career with Armstrong World Industries.
George had a distinguished 38-year career at Armstrong, holding various engineering and leadership assignments in the U.S., Newcastle, England, and Shanghai, China. Through Armstrong George and Martha also built many of their dearest lifelong friends. His loyalty and hard work were rewarded in 1996 when he became Plant Manager at Armstrong’s Pensacola plant. He retired from the company in 2003 and enjoyed the remainder of his life with Martha in their home by Grande Lagoon.
George was a loving, humble, and unassuming man, known for his quiet demeanor. His passions included European sports cars, particularly his 1963 Triumph TR3, boating, fishing, snorkeling, and traveling with Martha to the Caribbean during his retirement years, with many trips to their favorite island, Curaçao.
Services will be held July 5, 2024, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, 619 N. New Warrington Road, Pensacola, FL, with a viewing at 11am followed by a memorial service at 12pm. A reception will immediately follow.
