The world became a little less bright with the passing of Emma Helen Gordon on October 28, 2023. She was the last Matriarch of the Horne-Henderson family. Helen Gordon was a loving mother, teacher, taught Sunday school, and later, she became a Sunday School superintendent. She loved her family steadfastly. Always looking forward to a holiday when we could all be together.
She has joined many family members who have preceded her to include her sisters, Hale-Jo Bennett, Janie Brown, and Lynton Meadows. Her mom, Julia Barkley England, and husband Leon Gordon.
However, Helen is survived by her daughters, Lee Ann, Holly, and Laurie and her son Kent. Also, her grandchildren, Jason, Leslie, Aaron, Jessica, and Justin. And, her great grandchildren, Hayley, Kayleigh, Wasilah, and little Leon.
Helen was born in Chattahoochee, Florida. Later, she moved to Pensacola, Florida. She decided to become a teacher. She excelled in school as she graduated Valedictorian at Pensacola Junior College and Cum-Laude at Florida State. She began her teaching career in Pensacola. However, shortly thereafter, she meets the love of her life, Leon Gordon. They stayed married for 56 years till Leon expired in 2010. Helen and Leon stayed active in the Myrtle Grove Methodist Church as their children grew up. During her marriage to Leon, Helen went back to school, and graduating from UWF with a master’s in teaching and a minor in English.
Helen has always stayed active in the Methodist church. Not only Myrtle Grove methodist church, later she joined the Navarre Methodist church, and finally, she joined the Gonzalez Methodist Church.
Helen and Leon traveled and enjoyed their life. Please be a part of Helen’s life as she transcends her earthy world by signing your name in her book of life.
Thanks to all for your presence and being an important part of her life. Our family would like to thank all her devoted caretakers, the lovely ladies from the Gonzalez Methodist Church, and the Gonzalez Methodist Minister, Andy Perry.
