Ross Randle Terry, 88, was born February 1, 1936, in Sugarland, Texas to Ross and Helen
Terry. He attended the University of Houston for two years then joined the Naval Aviation Cadet
Program, US Navy in 1956. From 1963 to 1966,he served as an F-4J Radar Interceptor Officer
(RIO). In March 1966 was deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea and taken
Prisoner of War on Oct. 9, 1966. After spending 2,339 days in captivity, CDR Terry was
released during Operation Homecoming on March 4,1973.He was briefly hospitalized to recover
from his injuries at The Naval Hospital Memphis, TN, and then attended Naval War College at
Newport, RI. He then served with Training Air Wing Six, then CO of VT-10 at NAS Pensacola.
He then served as Operations Officer aboard the USS Lexington from Aug. 1977-1979,followed
by CNO Senior Officers CRS in Idaho Falls,Idaho, from 1979-1980. From 1981-1983 he served
as the Commanding Officer of the combat stores ship USS Niagara Falls as his final
assignment. He retired from the Navy at NAS Pensacola, FL On Nov. 1,1983.
Among his many decorations and awards are: The Silver Star, The Legion of Merit, 2 Bronze
Stars, 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses, The Prisoner of War Medal and 2 Purple Hearts.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Wanda (Susan) Terry and five children: Gay Wear (Mike),
Lori Saffell (Jack), Deborah Kennedy (Christopher), Gwendolyn Crawshaw (Jim), and Trudie
Ellis (Bobby): 10 grandchildren: Tiffany Gutierrez (Robert), Katie Graves (Corey), Jenny Knapp,
Cmdr Ryan Doyle (Chikae), Austin Doyle, Hillary Haas (Adam), Alex Van Zant, Jimmy
Crawshaw (Andrea), Doug Crawshaw (Rebekah), Zachary Terry and 15 great grandchildren.
A Visitation for Capt. Ross will be held Tuesday, May 28, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, 619 New Warrington Road, Pensacola, FL 32506. A Mass will occur Thursday, May 30, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 10650 Gulf Beach Hwy, Pensacola, FL 32507, with Graveside Service immediately following from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Barrancas National Cemetery, 1 Cemetery Rd, Pensacola, FL 32508.
