I'll always cherish the days spent at my grandparents' house.  Granny would carve watermelon for me and Amy, Paw-Paw let us play with the BB Gun out by his workshop, and they both made us the most delicious dinner whenever we would stay the night!  Granny always fried the best chicken.  I'm going to miss her dearly.

When I try to think of a memory with you, my mind is flooded with snapshots of many different memories.  Most of them are from when I would stay with you and Paw-Paw at your old house.  I know now that whenever Andrew and I would stay over there it was to give Mom and Dad a (much needed!) break, but for me, staying with you and Paw-Paw was like an adventure.  I always had so much fun.  There was so much to do at your house (and so much trouble to get into)!

-Climbing trees (I had three favorite trees to climb at your house)
-Driving the go-cart (and being scared to death when Andrew drove it and I was in the passenger seat)
-Eating the creamiest chicken noodle soup
-Hanging around in Paw-Paw's shop, smelling sawdust and gasoline and listening to country music
-Making ice cream soup (it's a difficult recipe: let the ice cream melt and then eat it!)
-Going in the greenhouse and seeing the plants, it was always so hot in there
-You scratching my back when I went to sleep
-You had so many snacks and sodas!
-Watching marathons of Scooby-Doo and Whose Line Is It Anyway?
-Getting my first bicycle at my birthday party at your house
-All the toys in the garage
-Riding in the backseat of Paw-Paw's truck
-Catching lizards and snails on the back sidewalk (I guess it's not too  hard to "catch" a snail!)
-Using your dial up internet!
-Paw-Paw had a basket of word search puzzles that I loved to look at
-You telling me that I could catch a bird by sprinkling salt on its tail-and you watching me actually attempt to catch one
-Andrew hitting me in the hand with a garden hoe and getting stitches
-Playing on the dirt pile (funny how something so simple can be so much fun for a kid!)
-You had a really cool Christmas display in the living room.  It was a little town with snow and houses and people.  I loved looking at it and playing with it
-Playing Skip-Bo with you

Aunt Anne was like my second mom and I felt like I was one of her kids too.  My earliest memory of her is from when I was about 4 or 5.  I remember her chasing the chickens in our chicken coop to catch one for dinner.  

When Joanne and I were into Barbie dolls, she sewed clothes for our dolls.  I still have my dolls and their clothes and I know just which ones she made.  Victoria used them when she was into Barbies and I told her which ones Aunt Anne had made.  

I was fortunate enough to be able to take a trip to Uncle Martin's with Aunt Anne and Seletta.  On the way, we went to Lookout Mountain.  When we got to Uncle Martin's,  we were put to work digging potatoes.   I have some great pictures from that trip.  

There were lots of sleepovers at Aunt Anne's and that is where I got to make so many crafts.  She never hesitated to let us make stuff as well as make a mess.  She took me to Vacation Bible School with Joanne.  

She walked us through Lavallet and Gaberonne to feed the ducks and that was quite a trek.  She took Joanne and I to TG&Y on Saturdays and gave us some money and let us buy candy.  She always cleaned house on Saturdays and would vacuum as Joanne and I watched cartoons.  She used Gain for her laundry and I loved the smell.  I still use Gain now.  She always called Uncle Jack "Honey".  

When I moved back to Pensacola, she liked to have wine coolers when we had Bunco at my house.  She hosted the Hassebrock reunion for many years at her house.  I was lucky enough to be able to attend the fish fry for the Jernigan reunion also.  There was always plenty of food at her house and she was such a good cook.  I have so many good memories of her.  I feel very fortunate to have had such a wonderful aunt.  She will always remain in my heart.  I love you, Aunt Anne.

I'm so very sorry Uncle Jack, Kathy, Seletta and Joanne that you have had to say goodbye to an amazing wife, Mom and lovely lady.  Aunt Anne made everyone feel so special!  When I dream of flower gardens, hers always comes to mind (then Uncle Jack's veggies!)  Her food was always delicious and she made it seem so easy to feed a crowd.  (That's love!)  Her home was ours when we came to visit, and it was always a place filled with lots of activity, love and so, so much laughter! 

My prayers today are full of thanks for being blessed to have had Aunt Anne play such a huge role in everything I loved about being with family.  But I pray for each of you as well as you go through these next few days with the strength and courage that she has so beautifully displayed to you all these years.  Godspeed!  She is so loved! She will be so missed.

Please know that you are in our thoughts and we will be lifting you up for comfort and peace.  Love to you all and Uncle Jack.  I can just imagine the joyful entrance into Heaven and the reunion with all who have gone before Aunt Anne.  We can rejoice in the fact that she is now her glorious self once again.  What a lovely, fun and kind aunt she was to me I loved our times together.  Aunt Anne was a very funny person who made my life so much more rich!

Anne will be greatly missed. She was kind, giving, and humorous. 

I had the privilege of knowing Anne and her lovely family while stationed in Pensacola. They were of great comfort as my husband was stationed away. We played bunco, gardened, and visited often. Her girls have taken great care of Anne and Jack.  My thoughts and prayers go out to all the family.

The celebration of life was beautiful. The plants were an extra special touch. Your sweet Mother was certainly smiling down on each of you. She is with each of you all the time now.

Aunt Anne was a wonderful, loving lady I remember as loving the pansies. Her yard was always full of them. She and Jack had a knack for plants, flowers and vegetable gardens-- especially the tomatoes!  Our son learned a lot from them both about planting. 

Aunt Anne always stood strong and stayed with her convictions and this is a trait I highly respect. She was a woman of God and if she felt something was right, she could back it with the Bible. God bless her for that. God bless the entire family. Joanne, I love you all, girl! Miss you! Hi Uncle Jack! Hi all of you! My prayers, thoughts, heart and love is with you always.

I first met Aunt Anne when I married into the family in 1974 to Richard Dykes lll. She was so welcoming to me, in fact her whole family was.   She loved flowers as much as I did and she was always potting extras for me to plant. 

I loved all the family reunions she and Uncle Jack put together.   We had so much fun every year.  I do miss those days.  I don't think Aunt Anne ever met a person she did not like, her home was so welcoming to me. We talked for hours at times when Uncle Jack and Richard were off doing whatever.  

She laughed a lot and shared some of her special recipes with me -- I think about the time when we first got married, Richard and I..... Aunt Anne took me grocery shopping for the first time.  We needed everything so I am not sure what I spent, but my husband was not happy and made me cry!  Aunt Anne gave him a lesson in marriage and to never ever question how much I spent for groceries! 

We know you are in Heaven we will see you again one day soon!

I'm so sorry your Mom passed.  I'll always remember the largest tomato I ever got was from her.  She knew I loved them.  I also remember going to Darryl's to eat.  I loved our visits.  When I cut her hair she would say at the end, "You can't cut it short enough!"  I love you lots and I'm here for you.

I'll always remember Aunt Anne and all the silly things we did growing up while under her care.  Even though we decorated her butter with love bugs and ate all the dough she had out to bake pies, she still loved and laughed with us. I have a lot of fond memories of those years. My love goes out to Joanne, Kathy and Seletta during this difficult time.


My deepest sympathy to Jack and all three of Anne's daughters. Anne was a wonderful person. Always with a smile and something sweet to say. 

I remember during my teenage years that Anne gave me two outfits. Those two outfits were my favorite things to wear and I wore them until they fell apart. One was a beautiful green dress. That was my prettiest dress-up dress. 

She was also always trying to help my mom with anything that she needed. I will always remember Anne as one of the nicest, sweetest ladies I have ever known. God bless and give comfort to her family that she left behind. You were fortunate to have had her as a wife and mother.

My Mother Since Birth, My Friend Forever

Mom, 

You were the best mother a girl could ever ask for.  I appreciate the values you instilled in me, and do my best to treat everyone the way I would like to be treated, just as you taught me.  You never told me what to do, but let me make my own decisions, right or wrong.  You supported me in everything I did.

As I grew into an adult our relationship added another dimension - friends! I loved the time we spent together, and it means more to me now than ever. You were always up for anything I wanted to do.  Some of our favorites were shopping and eating out.  We would shop at Cordova Mall and eat at Red Lobster.  We drove to Panama City to shop at the mall and eat at Capt Anderson’s. In Mobile we would shop at the mall and enjoy Bellingrath Gardens.  We visited Atlanta and climbed the back of Stone Mountain  and travelled to Callaway Gardens to see azaleas in the spring and Christmas lights in the winter.   We saw the sights in Savannah as we ate pralines and went to Tuscumbia and saw Helen Keller’s birthplace and the well pump where she first learned to communicate.  After I had Amy and Andrew we travelled to Orlando every chance we got to have fun with Seletta and her family. We could never go enough!

I really appreciate all the time you spent having fun with Andrew and Amy and all the times you kept them to help me.  There’s no way I could have ever repaid you for the times you had them while Sam was out of town and I was working.

You have a special place in my heart, and as I travel through life I’ll be taking you with me everywhere I go.

I always smile when I think of Aunt Anne. I always enjoyed the times that my family would visit Aunt Anne and Uncle Jack. I remember sitting around the kitchen table, talking and laughing.  Aunt Anne was the first person to tell me what a “party line” was and demonstrated it with her kitchen phone!  She always had the most beautiful flowers in her greenhouse. Of course, the Labor Day family reunions were always my favorite times to visit. She was always supportive of me trying to raise change in my jar for Jerry’s Kids.  She was a sweet lady that always made me feel loved. ❤️

...Many memories of Aunt Anne...but when I was probably 10 or 11, I did not want to go to the reunion at her house, because my sisters were being mean to me and telling me that Aunt Anne did not like me.  When Aunt Anne heard about it, she quickly told me that she loved me more than them...and scolded them for being bullies!
...I have a couple of stories in the Hassebrock cookbook that she shared about Darryl using her only block of butter to attach love bugs or ladybugs to....and another story of them trying to plant turnip seeds fast & throwing them at the end of the row...and getting in trouble when the seeds started sprouting...

Aunt Anne has always been the keeper of the Hassebrock Family "growth" records.  She would call (sometimes late at 🌙) to find out the information about new babies or spouses. Aunt Anne was a worker . ...whether growing flowers, cooking for  others, or welcoming people into her home. It was at a family reunion that I first met Anne.  She made me feel welcome and accepted.  She was earnestly interested in what was happening in the lives of others. She had a great sense of humor;  a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye! Aunt Anne will be remembered as having a servant' s  heart. We will miss this happy, funny lady.  Love to all the family....Gay & Bennie

I would like to tell you daughters you had one precious Mother, and your Daddy had a wonderful wife. She was my friend that I never forgot. When I was a young girl she befriended me. Kathy I was allowed by her to hold you when you were first born. She would let me hold you while she did a few things and oh what a thrill it was for I loved babies. And you were beautiful. Now I didn't get to see Seletta and Joanne until I moved back into the neighborhood. They were both as beautiful as you. I didn't get to come to her service.  My husband has Alzheimer's and I have to take care of him, but my prayers are with each of you and Mr Jack. Please tell him HELLO for me. Thank God friends for life.  Jackie Lee.

Dear MOTHER –

M – You started working in the Brentwood Elementary School cafeteria when I was in middle school.  It was such a treat when we got food from M-cDonald’s on Friday nights because you didn't want to cook anymore!

O - You always did a lot for O-ther people.  I remember the clothes, coats, and shoes you bought for the kids at Brentwood.

T - I didn’t inherit your green T-humb --- Kathy did!  Our yard was always beautiful with colorful flowers and plants that you shared with anybody who wanted some!

H – I remember you H-elping us build the tree fort we played in as kids.  And, you and Daddy came to Orlando to help Jason and Matthew turn their playset into a fort!  Kids had a lot of fun in both!

E - You could talk for-E-ver on the phone!  I remember your long conversations with anybody and everybody!  I don't know where you found the time to connect with folks, but you did!

R - Thanks for nurturing my love of 
R-eading!!  I remember going to the Bookmobile, whenever it was visiting at Eastgate, to check out books. This was absolutely one of my very favorite things to do growing up. 

You gave me a wonderful childhood!!  I love you and I'll miss you!

One of my earliest memories of Ms. Jernigan was going to ceramic class with Kathy and I. None of us knew what we were doing but we had a ball doing it! Lunches when we could get together were a hoot, never down always so enjoyable. Will miss her.

Aunt Anne was the first in the family to welcome me and make me feel like I belonged. She and Uncle Jack really became my Aunt and Uncle as much as David’s. Even though she never missed an opportunity to fuss at me about smoking, I knew it was because she cared. Every year we would go to family reunions hosted by Aunt Anne and Uncle Jack, and I always came home with an array of plants the she had rooted and planted in pots for me. I loved her dearly. She will be so very missed. 
P.S. from the family - At the Celebration of Life service Mary showed us a baby blanket that Anne sewed and gave her when Mary's children were born.  Mary shared that her family loves the blanket, and they have used it for several generations of babies!  

As far back as I can remember, I always looked forward to visiting your mom and dad on our trips to Pensacola as a child and as an adult. Aunt Anne was a warm smile and hug, a twinkle in her eye with her teasing humor, and always ready to play games and visit.  She would talk about work, funny moments, her frustrations and concerns about policy changes, the children's nutrition, and how much she loved the children. She knew the importance of feeding her school children and making their day brighter; being one more adult in their lives that cared for them.

We loved your yard and gardens, trees and out buildings, and spending hours at your kitchen table. Your parents took such pride in their land and it showed. A gem that continued to shine as the surrounding deep woods gave way to suburban homes.

Your mom and your family opened up your homes, family celebrations and holidays to our mom when she divorced Dad and moved back to Pensacola.  Even before that, when Mom would spend winters visiting and then working with Uncle Harry and Aunt Jean in the greenhouses before she moved down. She was a close member of your family going way back. Your mom was a generous and loving sister. 

One poignant memory is when your mom, Carolyn and I spent hours in the Sacred Heart surgical waiting room while my mom had a skin graft eye surgery to remove skin cancer.  Your mom was in the midst of spending a lot of time going up to Dorothy's to care for her and help sort out her house. She would take Connie or Mom with her, but she had to alternate since they weren't getting along. Eventually she couldn't take Mom with her, because Mom unintentionally made Dorothy uncomfortable with her unsolicited advice or judgments.  Your mom cried as she shared her hurt and frustration that her sisters couldn't get along with each other. It was a delicate balancing act and your mom was the glue that tried to hold family together. 

We love your mom so, so much and we will sorely miss her.
