Edward R. Sergeant, 68, of Glencoe Ave, Penn Yan, passed away Monday, October 10, 2011 at Soldiers & Sailors Hospital.
Edward was born September 15, 1943 in Sodus, New York, to Harmon and Pauline Torrey Sergeant. He married Rose Marie D’Abbracci in 1964.
He attended Empire State University to receive his Bachelor’s Degree and later received his Master’s Degree in Divinity from St. Bernard’s University. He was a manager of the Scientific Optics Division at Bausch & Lomb for 18 years. He was ordained as a deacon on April 17, 1982 and served for Church of Epiphany and St. Rose Church in Sodus for over 20 years; he became a chaplain for the Finger Lakes DDSO in 1985. Later, he served as a deacon for Our Lady of the Lakes Parish in Penn Yan. Deacon Ed was very involved in the Republican Party and had an affinity for golf, but above all, he loved to teach.
Edward is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rose Marie; two daughters, Karen Rawden and Kristi (Rob Sapp) Sergeant; son, Edward Robert Sergeant, II; grandchildren, Nicholas (Diana) Rawden, Kimberly Rawden, Julia Wilchenski, and Victoria Sapp; brother, Jim (Dorothy) Sergeant; aunt, Verlyn Sergeant; brother-in-law, PJ (Jean) D’Abbracci; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will be receiving friends Wednesday, 6-8PM, and Thursday, 2-4PM and 6-8PM at St. Michael’s Church, Liberty St., Penn Yan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10AM Friday, October 14, 2011 at St. Michael’s Church, Penn Yan. Interment will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery.
