Don served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, for which he received a Purple Heart, and was a metal pattern maker by trade. He graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas and pastored three churches in Alabama: East Centre Baptist, Clay Baptist and First Baptist of Odenville. Don also served as a Chaplain for the Alabama Baptist Disaster Team and the Pell City Police Department. He was also a member of First Baptist Church of Pell City.
James is survived by his step sons: Thomas M. Mann (Debbie) and James R. Mann (Susan); step daughters: Susan A. McClanahan (Bill), Cindy L. Alarid and Judy C. Fincher (Ed); grandchildren: Dawn E. Jennings (Josh), Eric M. Garner, Cherish L. Dendy, Joey Smith, Andrea Smith and Bethaney Smith; step grandchildren Patrick McClanahan (Stacy), Michael McClanahan (Tandi), Samuel Alarid (Gin), Adam Wright, Ben Wright, Leigh Hammer, James Mann and Nathaniel Mann (Lea); great grandchildren: David Glover (Lacey), Jessie Glover, Luke Glover and Nakota Dendy; step great grandchildren: Drake McClanahan, Blake McClanahan, Alexis Mann, Casey Alarid, Damien Alarid, Lilly Alarid and Willow Alarid; and great-great grandchild: Avery Gregory.
James was preceded in death by his first wife: Blanch Dendy; son: Christopher Dendy; daughter: Freida Ennett; second wife: Ann Dendy; step grandson: Chris Mann; parents: Suvties and Mary Dendy; and brother Ulysses Dendy.
A visitation for James will be held Saturday, March 12, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Pell City with a celebration of life funeral service to follow. A graveside service will occur Saturday, March 12, 2022 at 3:00 PM at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, Trussville, AL.
The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff of the Village of Cook Springs and the Col. Robert L. Howard State Veterans Home, as well as the wonderful staff of Lakeside Hospice for their professional, compassionate care of our loved one.
