Betty and her husband, Johnny, owned and operated Pell City Grocery on Cogswell Avenue for 33 years. During this time, Betty became the first female City Council member elected and was instrumental in the development of Lakeside Park in Cropwell. As an active member of Cropwell Baptist Church, she sang in the choir and served on numerous committees, offering her sage advice when needed. She and Johnny along with the assistance of several others organized the Cropwell Baptist Church “Omegas”, the senior adult fellowship group. Throughout the years, Betty served as a member of the St. Clair Head Start Board, Valley Hill Cemetery Board, St. Clair Regional Hospital auxiliary and multiple others.
Betty is survived by her daughters: Sarah Beth Gettys (Charles) and Rebecca Godsey; sister: Barbara Vines Money; grandchildren: John Parks Gettys (Lindsey), Emily Katherine Johnson (Scott), Elizabeth Turner Waldy (Andrew) and Michael Rex Godsey; great grandchildren: Charles Nathan Gettys, Shepherd James Gettys, Ellie Bain Johnson, Jake Gaston Johnson, Sarah Katherine Johnson, Daniel James Waldy, Luke Joseph Waldy, Grady Stephens and Adilin Stephens; and niece: Andrea Money Benes.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years: Johnny Edward Turner; son-in-law: Michael Godsey; parents: Ted and Jessie Vines; and brother: Joseph Vines.
A visitation for Betty will be held Friday, July 8, 2022 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Cropwell Baptist Church with a celebration of life funeral to follow. An interment will occur Friday, July 8, 2022 at Valley Hill Cemetery.
