William “Bill” Hirtle, age 82, of Pelham, Alabama passed away on August 8, 2020. He was born to Ralph and Faith Hirtle on July 5, 1938 in Boston, Massachusetts. Bill was raised in Toccoa, Georgia where at age 16 he joined the Georgia National Guard. He graduated from Toccoa High School. Bill continued his education at the University of Georgia where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Landscape Architecture. Upon his graduation, he received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Transportation Corp. He served as a Transportation Officer during the Vietnam War. Bill continued his military service in the Alabama Army National Guard where he was assigned to Joint Force Headquarters, Troop Command, 167th Movement Control Center, and 167th Theatre Sustainment Command. He proudly served as an instructor for Officer Cadets at the Alabama Military Academy. His proudest military accomplishment was graduating from the Command and General Staff College. He retired from the National Guard after proudly serving his country for 35 years. Simultaneously, Bill began a management career with Alabama Power Company where he retired after 25 years of dedicated service. Bill enjoyed attending church at Community Baptist Church in Maylene, whittling wood, and watching the Georgia Bulldogs football games. He was married to the love of his life, Ann Strickland Hirtle and they spent 57 wonderful years devoted to one another. Bill is survived by his loving wife Ann, his daughter Debbie Spurlin (Dave), son Warren Hirtle (Tamara), and grandchildren Meaghan, Ashley, Justin, and Shelby. He has a great-grandchild on the way.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama. The family will receive friends from 12:00 P.M., to 1:00 P.M., prior to the service at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama.
