William Mack "Billy" Gaines, 85, of Shelby County, Alabama passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, William C. Gaines and Juanita Porter Gaines.
Survivors include Billy's wife of 65 years, Peggy McGlothlin Gaines; one nephew, William "Keith" Welch; one niece, Alicia Welch; two great-nieces, Kaila Welch and Ann-Kathryn Smith; two great-nephews, Will Welch and Shelton Smith; and many cousins, including special cousins Norene and Ronnie Bailey.
Billy retired from The Birmingham News after more than 50 years. He loved collecting and remodeling antique cars, and was a member of the Dixie Vintage Antique Auto Club and ACCA. He also collected musical instruments and was an avid fan of bluegrass music.
Billy and Peggy enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Canada. He was a member of the well-known Boys of Central Park organization.
Billy's family and friends will gather for visitation at Riverchase Church of Christ in Hoover, Alabama on Monday, January 2, 2023 from 12 noon to 1 p.m., immediately followed by A Service of Remembrance at 1 p.m. at the church, 1868 Montgomery Highway, Hoover, AL 35244. Burial will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham, Alabama. Brother Dewayne Spivey will officiate.
